People are saying the new Masters Of The Universe movie is not a hit, but I refuse to believe it is a flop. I LOVE the new movie and I want it to succeed as I would love sequels and a She-Ra Princess Of Power spin-off. As for Masters, I am buying all the books, I plan to buy the DVD, I have some of the figures, I have the CD soundtrack on Deezer, and I am promoting the movie like crazy, online and offline. I heard, even if the movie doesn't perform well, that there way be plans for a live action TV series (and She-Ra may get this as well which I would truly love). This cannot be the end of this fabulous franchise. I've spent my whole life being a fan, and I will spend the rest of my life being a fan. I hope to write something like this one day myself.😍

Well Lioconvoy didn't like the movie, he thinks it was an absolute disgrace, and while I see his points, I think he's a bit in the wrong. And I love his videos, I am one of his biggest glazers, but I will say he has an ego and acts like he's better than everyone without meaning to. I'll wait until I see the movie, it'll be a while.
Hmmm... my personal opinion is that Lioconvoy is a pretentious, pompous, self-absorbed ass who has to be right -all of time- even when he is clearly wrong. But, that's just my take.
He was run off from the .org for arguing with literally every person he had a conversation with, again, because he always had to be right - even when he was wrong.
I can understand some of his criticisms toward MOTU 2026 (admittedly, I couldn't stomach the entire video of him bashing the movie for 20 straight minutes), however, he never stops to consider that this movie wasn't made solely for him. The studio, writers, producers, and director had a nigh-impossible task of bringing Masters of the Universe into the 2020's while remaining faithful to the source and accommodating today's audiences. Not an easy thing to do.
Are there some missteps? Certainly. Nevertheless, MOTU remains a fun, action packed movie that doesn't stray too far from its roots. It has the expected comedy, the unexpected reverence for costume and set design, and enough action to keep audiences, young and old, entertained.
Obviously, I'm more than a little biased here... but the fact remains, audiences and critics are finding a lot to like (if review metrics are anything to go by), and for a franchise that has been kept afloat by the fanbase for the better part of its existence, that's pretty darn good!

@ornclown yeah, I think he's right about some fans when he talks about the weird people on YouTube, but there's no point in him talking about them, unless they're a p*do. Like, I don't really care if Michael Mercy is a cringey weirdo. Lioconvoy is trying too hard to be a vigilante, but he's just acting weird. I still live his animation videos, which he only does after doing like ten thousand videos about YouTubers being stupid.

This leaves the He-Man reboot at a disastrous domestic total of roughly $45.7 million and a worldwide gross of about $84 million against a massive $200 million production budget. [1] Using the industry standard that a film needs to have box office of three times its budget to break even, they got about $215 million to go.
Gonna be lucky to break $100 million WW at this rate. Again I don't think Amazon was focusing on entirely the theatrical release for success, I mean this is the same studio dropping a big budget Voltron movie starring Henry Cavill direct to streaming ignoring the whole theatrical window entirely.
@dgsimo I didn't think it would bomb this big, there was a lot of hype. Then again, nobody expected some independent movies to blow up, and then they just had to move scary movie to the same day. It actually pisses me off that this is the worst time they could have released it.
It's all so very sad. I've waited almost half a lifetime for the new MOTU film and then we get this?! My gosh, did Mattel even read the script?
The initial box office that everyone was celebrating was so obviously illusionary and delusional because it was the loyal MOTU fan base. And there were fans that were just ecstatic about the film. Give me a break.
MOTU's loyal fan base has been waiting for another MOTU film for how many years? As President Andy Shepherd said in The American President about why so many voters rallied to a terrible candidate, "They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand." True. MOTU fans were starved and anything MOTU was bound to attract a large initial fan base. Now that the true 'majority of the movie-going public is seeing it, the flaws emerge.
I didn't want to post my initial opinions because I didn't want to burst anyone's bubble. But the trailer was just meh -- forgetting the whole he/him issue. The new He-man felt like he was sleepwalking in the trailer -- no energy, no excitement. He should have SCREAMED "I HAVE THE POWWWWWWWWER!!!" Instead he came off as a bland salesman selling mattresses at the Labor Day sale. Others have observed the overuse of humor was cringeworthy, as was denigrating our beloved characters' names. Added to all that, obviously the film was almost half an hour long.
Look, I'll allow that the whole superhero genre is incredibly oversaturated, soothe timing to release yet another superhero film was awful. How many more films can we see where someone in latex or a loin cloth is out to save the universe? But this... This was just very sad.
The film is toast. The fans deserved better...much better. 🙁
I feel like we still shouldn't give up hope. Will it break even? No. Should you still recommended as many people to go see it regardless? Yeah definitely. The more who see it and word of mouth of not just the movie, but the franchise the better.
And as we're all saying, we have Amazon their strategy of streaming on their side. Once the movie comes out on streaming, we should all just keep playing the film on loop in the background while we're all doing whatever just so streaming numbers can rise.
That being said, yeah I agree with some people on social media that it was an absolute boneheaded decision by Mattel and MGM not to title this movie "HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE" worldwide.
I know it was given that title in certain foreign markets. But people know He-Man, but most don't know the franchise name that is more regularly used than ever now to describe the entirety of it (both He-Man and She-Ra).
Also just asking, is the movie doing okay enough in foreign markets? I know Mexico and Brazil love He-Man to the point where I once read that Mexico kept Filmation reruns on TV for a very long time. It won't be enough to save the WW box office, but still curious.
The film's gotten a Japanese release despite it being the one big territory where MOTU never really reached an audience. Only things that have been dubbed in the language are the '87 film, She-Ra 2018 and Revelation. idk it seems like a franchise Japan would've loved if it was given a chance in it's prime considering the fact that all the evil warriors design-wise definitely wouldn’t look out of place as cheap costumed villains out of a tokusatsu show when you think about it
It bombing that hard is sad and so utterly weird considering that basically everyone I knew that saw it either liked or loved it; even the grumpy ones.
You're talking mostly about MOTU's loyal fan base. The general public gets the film's flaws. Try very hard to forget you are a MOTU fan and watch the trailer again. Look at the lack of energy. Then watch the film through the mass market's eyes and you'll see it's easily half an hour too long. And the jokes about the characters' names? First, it's needlessly offensive to the loyal fan base and second, the general public never heard those names before so they don't get the joke. And on and on and on.
I agree it's sad. I had such high hopes. But after forty-five years in the entertainment business, with 1,200 produced episodes of television and eighteen movies to my credit, I know how the Hollywood studio system works, how a screenplay gets pulled this way and that way, everyone wanting to put their own imprint on it to the point it barely resembles what it started out as.
How much better to have given just one writer who intimately knew the franchise, the key to a room he or she could lock themself alone in so they could spend six weeks writing the screenplay, deliver it and have it go into production.
Alas, that's not how things work, and this is the sad result.. RIP, He-man. I knew you well. 🙁
So yesterday, I saw a movie of a franchise that's as as important to me throughout my life as He-Man is to many of you
and this is going to sound very weird
but how the perception of older toys in Toy Story 5 is I see as an very extremely coincidental semi-allegory of MOTU's perception as a franchise at least in terms of general non-fan online discussion.
I know for sure that it's just me.
I see A lot of people on social media say about the MOTU movie "Who was this made for under 40? That's not why it's not doing good." then I actually see a bunch of people around my age who are like "I knew nothing about He-Man before but that movie was awesome and I suddenly may have interest. it is the next Speed Racer." stuff like that.
Yeah of course I cried. It's a Pixar movie. Loved it more than 4. See it.
Ironic that these two movies come out in the same summer when He-Man was name dropped in the fourth film. One of the minor reasons why Hordak is my favorite MOTU character is because his Filmation version reminds me of Zurg.

I'm 29 myself. 200x was the series I grew up with, but my mom and uncle had the vintage toys growing up so I played with those and eventually watched Filmation as well. The potential fans are there, the issue is that MOTU needs to do something more relevant to younger kids. 200x was perfect for that. It was mature enough to enjoy as an adult fan but it was also very appealing to kids. We need another series like that.
Despite enjoying the life action movie I strongly feel like the series as a whole needs to stay animated. Its relatively cheaper and there's a lot more you can do with it. I can guarantee if they did an animated He-Man film it would've made its money back in spades simply because a lot of kids who know nothing about MOTU would've gone. Those are the types of media that can grow the fandom. Not a live action movie made for older fans.

This franchise really needs it's equivalent to Clone Wars/Transformers Prime. a real epic, multi-season structured show feel that's not too mature. If it were up to me I would convince Mattel to somehow buy the She-Ra cartoon rights back from Universal and have the show co-star both the twins as they learn to lead the team of Masters against one of the most in-depth Skeletor's with a semi-split personality (one campy nyeh and the other serious)

I don't think we should put much stock in what quasi-journalists speculate. This movie will limp to $100 million maybe when traditionally a movie like this would need about $500 million to breakeven. Could they green light a sequel if it made less than that due to the Amazon streaming & merchandise angle? Perhaps, but there is a big difference in making a 100M compared to say 300M. This movie really underperformed despite whatever positive spin an Amazon executive wants to make. Even Travis Knight at one point said this movie needed to be successful at the box office to have a sequel. I think a sequel movie is still possible, but on the less likely side. Likely best case scenario, it gets a direct to Amazon sequel on a cheaper budget. More likely scenarios are something like a spinoff animated series or inspired by animated series like Transformers Prime.HANG ON PEOPLE HANG ON!!!
I would actually be okay with either, or both, of those options.
A direct to streaming, live-action sequel, or mini series would be awesome. If they can retain the same talent that starred in the first movie - even better. However, if they needed to put all their money into getting just Galitzine and Mendes back, I still think it could work... Let's be honest, anyone could have been in that Skeletor costume, and losing Alison Brie wouldn't be so bad. Idris Elba would be missed though...
A new spin off animated series taking place in the MOTU cinematic universe would be incredible as well. There are countless stories that could be told within this world and soooo many characters that could actually get the proper amount of time to develop if this were the case.

I just found out that the theater that the movie premiered in, the Man's Chinese Theatre, is also the same place that the filmation tv series premiered in. Coincidence?
So I once made a forum on this site called "He-Man in Japan" because I find the relationship between the Masters of the Universe franchise and the country where some of the most popular modern media franchises come from very interesting in that it's very limited when in it's prime popularity in the 80s, it was big everywhere except Japan, where from what I looked up only had a very limited release of the toys and the '87 film got dubbed for TV. No Filmation dub. I legit think it's the type of franchise Japan would love and seemingly the people at Mattel think this as well as She-Ra 2018 and Revelation with their anime influenced artstyles got Japanese dubs but I don't think it gained any real traction upon their releases there.
The movie got a Japanese dub and despite it not doing well box office wise like the rest, it seems it's really giving MOTU a cult following in the country as I'm finding a good number twitter posts from Japanese toy collectors with MOTU figures, both old and new admiring them. Also I think I tie-in manga is coming soon so there's that.
Some posts in particular interests me in which some of the new toys in Japanese packaging when I'd assume they just be direct western imports (no language change on the packaging. A lot of anime figure collectors import items with untranslated packaging) but according to a user these items are limited to Amazon Japan and they just slap Japanese text stickers over the english labeling on the boxes.
I lowkey want a Filmation Japanese dub where Skeletor's manic behavior gets turned up to eleven and they make Orko sound adorable as hell (they'd likely cast a woman to voice him)
