The new issue of The Toy Book revealed this week officially a new animated series had been in the works and would be dropping exclusively on YouTube this Summer from Mattel as part of a multi year roadmap for MOTU.
Now via a person apparently directly involved with the series, it's been revealed that the series will be dropping June 10th! He describes it as a "reboot" but there's no other official details.
Last year Toy World ran a supplement to one of their issues that featured Mattel covered the movie and mentioned as part of their marketing plans they would be releasing "animated prequel shorts" leading up to the movie's release. I believe He-Dad posted this but my memory is fuzzy 😆
When He-Mania reported this the supplement was quickly edited and the mention of a new animated series was deleted. Could this be it or something else entirely? Some of the movie merch does feature movie designs as a animated series..?
I know AJ is slammed with covering the movie and now MOTUniverse so figured I'd spin this off in a new topic to discuss rather than dumping everything in one movie thread. 😆
Fingers crossed it's a sequel. But right now I need more revolution
LinkedIn profile for the individual who posted the drop date lists the series as being called Tales of Eternia and is described as a reboot of the 80s cartoon and is 20 episodes!
@dgsimo I wonder if it's like a What if the 80s show was a sequel to the movie, type of shwo. I hope that is. They already have the perfect designs on all that beautiful MotU merch
Could be a prequel and sequel being 20 episodes? We won't have to wait long to find out!
Also looks like Snipple Animation is the studio behind it and have quite the resume in Animation.
@dgsimo I hope it is both, but not a full on prequel. I can't wait until it comes out. I just wonder how it's a reboot of the original 🤔
@kinggrayskull09 People use the word Reboot veeeeery loosely these days… so it can really be anything.
The new Roseanne was called a Reboot but wasn’t that simply a Sequel?
Industry likes to use reboot these days, sounds more trendy, but it could be rather a prequel or a sequel instead.
So yeah, who knows… we might not know till we see the first trailer etc
20 eps is a lot but I hope the eps are not too short… Tales could mean really short character introductions / solo adventures… that flesh out the movie world?

I hope they aren't shorts, also Roseanne kinda was a reboot because it retconned alot while also keeping it all cannon. It was weird.
Interesting… it’s very cartoony but I like some of their choices, too. Teela looks great. Interesting with the H logo.@jukka made a video about this with new designs
Mostly, I’m very happy we’re getting more animated adventures, and this is visually kinda more closer to my jam than the CGI series. Though ofc Revelation was my favorite of the newer visuals. I like drawing 😃
(but I did like the stories in the CGI series and also enjoyed it).
Anyway, even if it is more humorous and young, I’m looking forward to checking it out! Filmation was also a kiddie show, so I’m keeping an open mind.
Would be reeeeeally nice to get kids more into MOTU.
@cosmic I hope we get full episodes instead of just shorts. It looks cute, innocent, and knows it's audience.
Eeehhhh never mind lol This is obviously aimed at a much younger audience given the art style and seems to be a mix of Revelations designs....of course there's going to be discourse again because of race swapping Duncan.
@dgsimo I don't mind it as much. I get why they're doing it because kids would be confused why he's black in the movie but white in the cartoon
I'm happy to see that the character designs are VERY faithful to Filmation, so that's a big plus (unlike the CGI show). Not a fan of the "kiddie" style animation art though. I don't see a reason for that look.
It could be a very successful "Teen Titans GO!!" reboot.... or, a very UN-successful "ThunderCats ROAR" reboot.
Time will tell, but I have to believe that these will be shorts aimed at the current generation of young kids. Most new animated shows have gone the way of shorter episodes and/or split episodes.
Also, I feel like it is meant to capitalize on the movie's projected success... kids will want more MOTU when they leave the theater, and this will fill the void for them.
One question I have: when the toy line undoubtedly arrives, will that mean Mattel will have Core, Chronicles, Origins, Mini-Masters, and now this one?!? That's a lot.

@ornclown Thundercats is my favorite thing of all time, (Which is hard to say because I adore MotU) and I do not like Thundercats roar because of the show itself, it's that it was made because they hated the original show, and them used the classic music amd storylines. The show is okay, I just don't like the people behind it. I don't think this new series will go that route. Btw, I think we should have a Thundercats subforum discussion, because I would love to talk about it.
@kinggrayskull09 Yeah, I don't think anything could be as bad as ROAR was... that was just not what the TC community wanted nor needed. Hopefully, that disaster helped other future projects realize what not to do with properties like TC and MOTU.
Sadly, I think that ThunderCats ROAR set back any new animated TC show by several years. It made the property radioactive and nobody wants to risk an investment now... 😪

It seems the episodes will be 4 minutes long, and fast paced. Basically mini-sodes.
