I am sorry Sarah didn't win her heat, but I hope she may have another chance at Immunity this week or be safe from the next Elimination either way. I am delighted for Depinder of course and I hope she wins the Immunity tomorrow.

Tonight on MasterChef was a Double Immunity Pressure Test featuring the theme of epic ice cream dishes. The 7 winners from last night (Depinder, Callum, Beau, Audra, Theo, Andre & Alana) were given a different ice cream flavour and they had to make a dish inspired by them.

First, the 4 dishes that did NOT meet the judges seal of approval.

Beau had Honeycomb Ice Cream. He made Chocolate & Honeycomb Ice Cream Cones but the judges felt his dish wasn't visual enough to be really Pressure Test worthy. The ice cream also looked a trifle sloppy.

Audra had Caramel, Honey & Macadamia Ice Cream. She made Gula Melaka (Palm Sugar) & Coconut Ice Cream Filo Fingers, Honey Creme Patisserie, Toasted Macadamia & Coconut, Salted Honey & Coconut Caramel. The textures and flavours were good, but the palm sugar overwhelmed the dish making it too sweet and bitter, and the honey was barely detectable in the dish.

Theo had Raspberry & White Chocolate Ice Cream. He made a simple Raspberry & White Chocolate Tart with those flavours. It was delicious, but unimaginative and thus hardly Pressure Test worthy.

Andre had Cookies & Cream Ice Cream. He made Zeppole (Choux Puffs), Home Made Amaretti Cookie & Creme Anglaise Ice Cream but he put way too much whiskey in the dessert and the execution was clumsy.

 
 
Now for a dish that ALMOST got there!

Alana had Roasted Hazelnut & Chocolate Ice Cream. She made Chocolate Hazelnut Ice Cream, Chocolate Bark, Blackberries & Tarragon Oil. The judges felt her dessert needed more refinement though. She almost made the Top 2.

Depinder had Matcha Green Tea & White Chocolate Ice Cream. She made an elaborate four-layered Matcha Genoise Sponge Cake, White Chocolate Ganache, Berry Jam, Swiss Meringue Butter Cream & Berry Marshmallow Fluff. The judges LOVED her cake, they praised its flavours and perfect light and airy texture. The berries and cream, which could have been heavy and too sweet, were absolutely in perfect harmony with the cake. Even the particular judge (Andy Allen) who doesn't even like either matcha or cake scoffed down his plate and wanted more! Depinder is a true powerhouse in this kitchen and always delivers the best dishes. I think she can WIN this season!

Callum had Cafe Grande (Coffee, Chocolate Coated Almonds & Grand Marnier) Ice Cream. He made an elaborate dessert with 12 elements and delivered the best in each element. These included: Almond Praline, Almond Mousseline, Choux Pastry, Lion's Mane Mushroom & Coffee Ice Cream, Roasted Almond Dark Chocolate Disc, Grand Marnier Gel, Creme Fraiche Pebbles, Honeycomb, Frozen Mandarin, Charred Mandarin, Dry Iced Mandarin Leaves, Espresso & Grand Marnier Sauce.

Tomorrow night is a Service Challenge (where the contestants are grouped into teams by matching coloured aprons) with the theme of all things dough-related. The winning team will join Depinder & Callum in Immunity from Sunday which is the only Elimination this week.

I hope Sarah is in the winning team tomorrow, I would love for her to have Immunity from Sunday as well.

Tonight on MasterChef was all about dishes made with dough! The challenge was for each team to create one savoury dish and one sweet dish each, with money raised going to charity. Our four judges (Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, Jean-Christophe Novelli & Andy Allen) and 100 guests had their meals in the garden which Poh especially decorated the night before for the event which raised $4000 for charity (they didn't specify which charity though, at least I don't think they did). I may have missed that part though, my TV is a little glitchy lately.

 
As you know, Depinder & Callum won Immunity last night so they won't be competing again until after Sunday's Elimination. They did enjoy the food on offer tonight though.

Tonight was a Service Challenge where one of the teams also won Immunity. 
 
The contestants were grouped by matching coloured aprons into 4 groups of 3. A Team Leader was nominated to create the menu, do the shopping and help with the cooking which was mainly done by the other members of the group.
 
The teams were:
 
 
The Pink Team - Leader Ben, Samira & Alana:
 
Savoury: Lamb Pita, Zhug Yoghurt, Aleppo Sauce & Sumac Onions
 
Sweet: Chinese Doughnut, Fennel Sugar, Pistachio & Tahini Kadaifi & Chocolate Cream
 
*The savoury dish was well-received, especially Samira's pita bread and Alana's side dishes, but the main trouble with this team's dish rested in the dessert, the doughnuts made by Ben (which looked more like eclairs) were too tough and dense and not fluffy enough due to the fact that too much baking powder was used which affected the texture.
 
 
The Yellow Team - Leader Jamie, Snezana & Audra:
 
Savoury: Pan Seared Prawns, Cold Noodle & Vegetable Salad, Black Vinegar Dressing & Crispy Peanuts
 
Sweet: Lemongrass Lime Cream Brioche Buns
 
*The savoury dish had so many flaws - the prawns were undercooked, the noodles (Audra made them) were rubbery and hard to chew and there were too many in ratio with the other elements, and Snezana's dressing was too bitter and unbalanced and the noodles could not absorb the flavours. The biggest enemy of this whole spread was time, and the rushing of the food due to poor time management. Jamie's dessert was well-received though and well-flavoured.
 
 
The Orange Team - Leader Theo, Beau & Andre:
 
Savoury: Gnocchi Porcini Bolognese
 
Sweet: Lemon Meringue Sourdough Doughnuts
 
*Beau & Andre's savoury dish was rich and flavoursome, but the dessert was far too sweet and needed something to offset this problem. Also, the meringue was deemed unnecessary. Theo was informed by the judges about the sweetness issue, but he didn't listen.

The Turquoise Team - Leader Declan, Sarah & Laura:
 
Sweet: Choux Buns, Nutella Creme Patisserie, Salty Hazelnut Praline & Macerated Strawberries
 
 
*The pizza (Sarah's contribution) was light and airy on the inside and crisp on the outside and the sauce and toppings were delectable. Initially, with the dessert, Laura screwed up the praline which became like a hardened brick of toffee, but she carefully and insightfully added enough olive oil to re-emulsify the praline which was saved as a result. Declan's buns were perfect, light as a feather. When the dessert was eventually served, it was declared flawless.
 
 
So naturally, the Immunity winning team was The Turquoise Team so Declan, Sarah & Laura will join Depinder & Callum in safety from Sunday's Elimination which will be an epic two round challenge where the least impressive dishes from Round 1 will see their makers sent to Round 2 where the least best dish will send its maker home.

I am delighted Sarah & Depinder (as well as Callum) are safe this weekend, as well as Declan & Laura who, although she initially screwed up the praline, she did her best to save it and made it a winner in the end.
 
The following contestants are still vulnerable: Ben, Audra, Snezana, Jamie, Beau, Alana, Theo, Andre & Samira.
 
Ben no longer has his Immunity Pin to save himself since he cashed it in last week.
 
Next week will be an epic week full of deliciously decadent desserts!

Sunday night on MasterChef will begin an epic week of culinary adventures and competition.

Sunday's Elimination will feature a 40-ingredient laksa where the contestants will have to guess the ingredients in the dish. The first (however many) who guess incorrectly will go to the second round where they will cook something based on those ingredients I assume where the least impressive dish will see its maker sent home.

 
Thankfully my lovelies Depinder & Sarah are safe from Sunday as are Declan, Laura & Callum before rejoining the contest from Monday onward.

I'm not sure whether Monday is a prelude to an Immunity or an Elimination though on Tuesday. Best dishes may be chosen for possible Immunity in the Pressure Test the next night, or the least favourable may be chosen for an Elimination challenge.​

Judge Poh Ling Yeow inspires an epic Pressure Test bake-off on Tuesday. I bet lovely Depinder will ace this challenge after seeing her fabulous cake from last week. I think Sarah will do well also. This could be either an Elimination or an Immunity, I'm not sure which yet. Usually Eliminations are on Tuesday or Sunday, but some Tuesday Pressure Tests have been Immunities not Eliminations this season. This is presumably to avoid the show becoming predictable and formulaic.
