Thoughts about the remaining contestants.

Snezana has been in the bottom more than anyone else, although Ben has been there a few times also. Both have done more Pressure Tests than anyone else as well.  Then again, Snez can occasionally pull off a great dish sometimes. I'm not sure if I can see them in the finals though.

I have a feeling Laura is also going to face a possible elimination again soon. She started strong but has been floundering a lot lately.

 
Jamie is also erratic in his cooking as well. He's not really one of my favourites.
 
Callum, Depinder & Sarah are usually the strongest contenders for the championship, sometimes - very rarely - in the middle but usually among the top.
 
 
I'm hoping for a Depinder & Sarah showdown. No matter who wins, it will be someone I adore.

In other MasterChef news, tomorrow is our beloved Juan De La Cruz's Birthday! I miss him so much and hopefully he might return someday. I would love to see him write a cookbook, open a restaurant, get his own cooking show, and since he is a fabulous musician, I would love a CD from him.

Tonight on MasterChef, the trio of Callum, Jamie & Snezana had to recreate guest chef Michael Wilson's Marguerite Opera, otherwise known as the Tower Of Terror, an epic dessert consisting of: Jerusalem Artichoke Gelato, Coffee & Balsamic Vinegar Infusion, Coffee Cremeux, Hazelnut Parfait, Plain Biscuit Tuile, Cocoa Tuile, Coffee Oil, Chocolate Sponge, Cocoa Nib Nougatine, Roasted Hazelnuts & Chocolate Disc.

Callum burned his artichokes and had to repeat this step.
 
Snez & Callum both failed to complete their chocolate disc component, meaning their dishes were incomplete. 
 
All three had elements that were too thick, especially the nougatine. 
 
Snez & Callum found it hard to cut the rounds because their nougatine was too hot, not surprisingly since they forgot to remove the baking tray before cutting!
 
Jamie had some problems with his artichoke gelato and could not get the perfect shaped "rose scoop". However, he did complete all his elements.
 
Also, unfortunately for Snezana, her tower collapsed! It's supposed to be the Tower Of Terror, not the Leaning Tower Of Pisa! However, she did make the best gelato of the three.
Therefore, the winner of tonight's Immunity was Jamie who will be joined with whoever wins tomorrow night's Immunity in safety from Sunday's Elimination.

I hope the other Immunity winner tomorrow will be Depinder or Sarah (both would be lovely, but I think it's only a Single Immunity) for the Alphabet Cloche Challenge. Under each cloche is an ingredient that starts with the letter above it. Apparently, Laura chooses a letter with an ingredient that she is not happy with!
 
No idea what Sunday's theme is yet. Be safe Depinder & Sarah!

Tonight on MasterChef, the contestants have to choose a lettered and covered cloche. The contents of the cloches are not revealed until chosen, they feature an ingredient that starts with that letter. If the contestants don't like a particular ingredient, they are allowed to choose a second cloche (but no more than that). Then they have to hero their ingredient in a dish to win this week's last Immunity from Sunday.

Jamie who already won a week's Immunity - especially from Sunday's Elimination - does not compete tonight.


Ben chose Cloche V which featured vegemite. He was pleased with this ingredient. He made Mushroom & Ricotta Stuffed Agnolotti, Oyster Cream, Garlic & Lemon Gremolata & Vegemite Chicken Veloute. Vegemite is a very controversial ingredient, people either love it or hate it. I don't think the judges were swayed by it.

 
Callum chose Cloche K which featured kimchi. He did not like the idea of cooking with this ingredient, so he chose Cloche Q, featuring quinces which he MUST cook with. He made Potato Panna Cotta, Poached Quinces, Bay Oil & Potato Chips. It was an interesting dish, but the mix of sweet and savoury can be very divisive.


Depinder chose Cloche C which featured coffee beans. She was pleased with this ingredient. She made Coffee & Raspberry Bombe Alaska. The judges LOVED this dish.

Laura chose Cloche F which featured fish sauce. She did not like the idea of cooking with this ingredient, so she chose Cloche A, featuring anchovies which she MUST cook with. She made Taglierini Pasta, Anchovy Dashi Butter, Yuzu Kosho & Green Ants. Yes, you read that last part correctly...ants. Gross! The judges seemed to love it though.



Sarah chose Cloche P which featured pandan. She was pleased with this ingredient although she admitted she had never cooked with it before. She made Squid Ink, Prawn & Pandan Pani Puri, but the judges thought the pandan was too understated and overpowered by the other flavours. I wish she had chosen a different cloche with a more agreeable ingredient. 

Snezana chose Cloche M which featured miso. She was pleased with this ingredient. She made Miso & Black Sesame Ice Cream & Chocolate Tuile. The judges loved this dish too.

 

Sadly Sarah made the Bottom Dish tonight. I am so glad this wasn't an Elimination night. However, I am confident she can get back into the game with her usual excellence. 
 
 
Ben & Callum were in the middle tonight.

However the winner of tonight's Immunity was Laura who will join Jamie in safety from Sunday.

Personally, I thought Depinder's dish was much better and she should have won the Immunity instead. Even Snez's dessert was better than Laura's dish in my opinion. Maybe it's the ants.
 
No way on his planet that I am eating ants no matter what colour they are!

Sunday's theme is TIME. The contestants (minus Jamie & Laura) have to compete in two rounds where the three least impressive dishes from Round 1 have to play Round 2 from where someone will be Eliminated. Whatever time they have left from Round 1 is what time they have to cook with in Round 2.
  

I hope Depinder & Sarah (or at least one of them) will be in the Top 2 in Round 1 so they don't have to play Round 2 and risk Elimination on Sunday. I will be nervous for them for the rest of the week, although I know they are both sublime and strong contestants.
 
I know this means that would mean the end of the road for Ben, Callum or Snezana, but I must cheer for my two favourites!

Coming this week on MasterChef, we have original MasterChef legend and champion Julie Goodwin, last year's champion Nat Thaipun and handsomely cute Hugh Allen as Guest Chefs.
 
Apparently some MC fans are accusing the judges (particularly Andy Allen) of favouritism toward Laura Sharrad & Callum Hann, and of being against Sarah Todd. I don't believe this to be true, since lovely Sarah has been in the top several times (as has lovely Depinder Chhibber) and Laura & Callum have been in the bottom a few times (but not as many times as Snezana Calic & Ben MacDonald). Although Jamie Fleming has won Immunity this week, he usually floats around the middle somewhere.
 
It's no secret that I am a huge Depinder & Sarah fan and obviously want them in the Top 2 in the Grand Finale. Still, I don't like the practice of putting some people down to raise others up, and I don't think the judges do that either.
 
We have 7 contestants left as of this minute and 6 after Sunday night, usually the Grand Finale has obviously 2 - or sometimes 3 - finalists, so there will be two more weeks with either 3 or 4 more Eliminations before then. I'm hoping for a Depinder & Sarah showdown with a possible third finalist - as long as Depinder or Sarah win of course.

Monday night on MasterChef is the Everything Mystery Box where I am guessing that they have to use EVERYTHING in the box.

Spoiler Alert...

You can clearly see the lovely Depinder in the background behind Jamie (she's a bit fuzzy but obviously there) so I am delighted that she will not be the one eliminated on Sunday.

I just hope Sarah will be safe then.

Tuesday night on MasterChef is a Pressure Test set by guest Hugh Allen from Vue De Monde. This could either be an Elimination or a chance at Immunity.

Wednesday night on MasterChef is all about Home Comforts (I am guessing Julie Goodwin is the guest chef here).

I'm guessing the appearance of Laura here means she hasn't won any Immunities next week, at least before Wednesday.

It also means she hasn't been Eliminated if the previous night is an Elimination.

Laura Sharrad & Jamie Fleming are safe (having won Immunity last week) but Sunday night is another epic MasterChef Elimination for one of these five contestants: Ben MacDonald, Snezana Calic, Sarah Todd, Callum Hann & Depinder Chhibber.

I wish them all well of course, but I especially want Depinder & Sarah to be safe.

Tonight on MasterChef was the 90 Minute Split Challenge. The contestants were given 90 minutes total cooking time to make anything they wished. However, there was a catch. The time had to be split between two rounds. However long they took in Round 1 was time taken off their second cook (if they needed one). For example, if a contestant used 65 minutes to make a dish in Round 1 and was sent to Round 2, they would only have 25 minutes to make that dish.

Remember, Laura & Jamie won Immunity last week and aren't competing tonight.

However, Ben, Callum, Depinder, Sarah & Snezana had a whopper of a time tonight. The Top 2 contestants from Round 1 didn't have to play Round 2 and were thus safe from Elimination and could relax in Round 2 which was played by the makers of the Bottom 3 dishes.



Round 1:


Ben used up 25 minutes and made King George Whiting, Mussels & Charred Cucumber Salad. However, his mussels were undercooked and some still had their beards on. He hadn't shucked them properly.

 
 
Callum used up 30 minutes and made Moules Frites (Potato Fondant), Cider Mussels, Squid Ink & Mussel Pastries & Apple Fennel Slaw. His dish was very well-received.

Depinder used up 35 minutes and made Aloo Tikki Chole Chaat consisting of Masala Chole (Chickpea Curry), Pea Filled Aloo Tikki (Spiced Potato Patties), Green Chutney, Sweet Chutney, Masala & Yoghurt Sauce. The judges called her dish absolutely magical and it is the one I would delightedly eat. I can't believe she did all this in such a short time.
 
Sarah used up 50 minutes and made Spiced Lamb Skewers & Pomegranate Hollandaise. However, she overcooked it and as a result it was too dry.

Snezana used up 50 minutes and made Beef & Lardo Kebabs, Green Buttermilk Sauce & Aioli. She spent so much time screwing up and having to remake her mayonnaise several times for the aioli that she undercooked the dish.

The Top 2 dishes were made by Depinder & Callum who were safe from the Round 2 Elimination and thus no longer needed the remaining time. When Depinder plays to her strengths, she is unstoppable and formidable.
 
 
Depinder - Aloo Tikki Chole Chaat - Masala Chole (Chickpea Curry), Pea Filled Aloo Tikki (Spiced Potato Patties), Green Chutney, Sweet Chutney, Masala & Yoghurt Sauce.

Ben, Sarah & Snezana were sent to Round 2.
 

Round 2:

Ben had 65 minutes left over and made Scallop Cappellacci, Braised Fennel, Squid Ink Emulsion, Prawn Bisque Sauce & Fennel Salad.

Sarah had 40 minutes left over and made Scallop Pie, Spiced Vichyssoise & Curry Leaf Oil. 

Snezana had 40 minutes left over and made Mushroom Ragu, Spiced Polenta & Porcini Cream. However, the mushrooms were extremely dry and leathery.



Both Sarah & Ben made top dishes this time, so they were sent back to safety. 
 
 
Like Callum in Round 1, Ben had a successful dish in Round 2, redeeming himself well.
 
 
I was never so worried yet so delighted for Sarah, she really pushed herself to the limit and rocked a winner in Round 2, redeeming herself from Round 1.
 
 
Ben - Scallop Cappellacci, Braised Fennel, Squid Ink Emulsion, Prawn Bisque Sauce & Fennel Salad.

There was only one Bottom Dish in Round 2 made by Snezana who was Eliminated. I had a feeling all night that this would be the outcome and I wasn't surprised. When she wasn't making mistakes, she was wandering the garden looking for an ingredient. Admittedly Sarah did this too, but not as often or for as long as Snez.

Tomorrow (Monday) night is the Everything Mystery Box where the contestants have to use everything in the box.  
 
This is the prelude for Tuesday night's Pressure Test (set by Hugh Allen) which could either be a chance at Immunity or an Elimination. 
 
On Wednesday night we have two guest chefs- original MasterChef legend Julie Goodwin and last year's winner Nat Thaipun and the theme is Home Comforts.
 
Hoping for a successful rest of the season for Depinder & Sarah!

Tonight on MasterChef was the Everything Mystery Box set by judge Andy Allen containing the following ingredients. Bay Lobster, Marrow, Greek Yoghurt, Purple Daikon, Honeynut Squash, Kumquat Jam, Seaweed Tapenade & Shiso.

The remaining 6 contestants had to use EVERYTHING in the box, and while they were allowed to use the obligatory under the bench staples, the pantry and garden were out of bounds. A chance for Immunity tomorrow is on the table for the Top 4!
