Bottom 2:

Jamie made Lobster & Honeynut Squash Puree & Shiso Oil but instead of plating it properly, he just served it on top of the Marrow which, despite the sound flavours, kind of looked lazy and uninspired.

Sarah made a Spring Roll dish she called Andy's Cigars using all the ingredients. Sadly her flavours and balance were slightly awry.

Since only the 4 best dishes will go into tomorrow's Immunity Challenge, that means Jamie & Sarah (especially sadly for the latter) did not make it.

Thankfully however, Depinder will have a chance at winning Immunity tomorrow along with Ben, Callum & Laura.

I am worried for Sarah, she started so strong but has been teetering close to the other edge lately. I hope she can get back into the game so she can be in the Grand Finale.

I have no such fears for Depinder who has gone from strength to strength consistently from the beginning of the season. She is a formidable powerhouse. It appears that Depinder looks concerned that tomorrow's ingredients are out of her comfort zone and that she won't succeed. However, she thought the same thing tonight and proved that she can accomplish anything if she has a positive attitude, works hard and shows loads of creativity. I've noticed she often looks worried, like a deer caught in the headlights before a judging, but only relaxes and shows her inner - and outer - radiant beauty after she has discovered that she can indeed create magic. She is so sincere and adorable, but seems shy and unsure of her own greatness.

Tomorrow night, Ben, Callum, Depinder & Laura will be cooking at the Vue De Monde restaurant under the eye of head chef Hugh AllenThe winner of that challenge will win Immunity from Sunday's Elimination. Naturally I am hoping Depinder pulls out another showstopper and wins it.

Wednesday is all about Home Comforts with guest chefs and former champions Julie Goodwin & Nat Thaipun and is another Immunity Challenge.

Tonight on MasterChef, last night's Top 4 (Ben, Callum, Depinder & Laura) got to cook at the Vue De Monde restaurant, headed by guest chef Hugh Allen.

I thought it would be a Pressure Test, but since this season has a penchant for shaking things up, tonight was a Service Challenge instead. Each of the four contestants were tasked with cooking a different course with a special ingredient chosen by Hugh. The meal was served to the restaurant's diners and to be tested by Hugh and the regular judges Andy Allen, Sofia Levin, Poh Ling Yeow & Jean-Christophe Novelli.

Callum's ingredient was wasabi leaves and his task was the vegetarian course. He made Wasabi Leaf Pasta, Shio Koji & Shiitake Mushrooms, Jerusalem Artichoke Chips, Roast Jerusalem Artichoke, Shio Koji Mushroom & Wasabi Leaf Sauce, Wasabi Oil & Pickled Wasabi Leaf. He amazed the judges by making the pasta in the shape of the wasabi leaves, complete with their leafy pattern.

Ben's ingredient was kelp and his task was the seafood course. He made Butter Poached Marron, Freekeh Risotto & Kelp Broth. His dish was not as impressive as the others although it looked good to the judges. However he failed to use the kelp in a way that highlighted its flavours so it got lost in the equation. This knocked him out of the running for the Immunity.

Laura's ingredient was golden beetroot and her task was the main protein course. She made Steak, Salt Baked Golden Beetroot & Watercress Sauce. Given my vegetarian status, this was obviously my least tempting dish.

Depinder's ingredient was green ants and her task was the dessert course. She made Coriander & Green Ant Ice Cream, Yoghurt Sorbet, Pineapple Granita & Ginger Meringue.

*Could somebody please tell me what the hell is the obsession with green ants, or eating any kind of ants or bugs! Seriously? First Laura and now Depinder. However, in Depinder's defence she did not choose this ingredient herself as Laura did the other week. I absolutely love Depinder, but I never dreamed of ants in my ice cream before. Overall, Depinder's dish looked like a heavenly dream and most of the elements I would love to try, except for that one.

I knew Laura would not win Immunity tonight because she was visible in the preview for tomorrow night's episode in another accidental spoiler. The show needs to be more careful about this in future.

The judges ended up with a problem. Except for Ben, the other three dishes were so spectacular that they were faced with a very rare three-way tie between Callum, Depinder & Laura. In the end, the Immunity was awarded to Callum, the first official member of the Top 5 for 2025.

I was hoping for another Depinder victory, but there's always another chance tomorrow night, plus she was one of the Top 3 tonight!

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this, but the contestants stay in a hotel near the MasterChef premises during the course of the season.

Tonight our contestants were given letters from their families back home to inspire and cheer them on. Understandably things got very emotional. Then the judges set the Immunity Challenge - to make a personal dish inspired by home and family.

Callum, having won a week's Immunity, did not cook tonight and won't until after Sunday.

Bottom 2:

Ben made Kingfish, Potato & Herb Gnocchi, Mussels & Clams & Vermouth Cream Sauce, but his fish was overcooked.

Jamie made Beef, Roasted Turnips, Miso & Eggplant Puree & Red Wine Jus but his sauce was too rich and heavy and needed to be more balanced and lighter.

Laura made a dessert called A Native Australian Summer consisting of: Paperbark Ice Cream, Wattleseed Puff, Cinnamon Myrtle Creme Patisserie, Appleberry Caramel & Green Ants. Yes, it's those blasted green ants again. I never want to see another green ant as long as I live.

The ladies surpassed the gentlemen tonight.

The winner of tonight's Immunity was Laura who will join Callum in Immunity from Sunday's Elimination with a challenge set by the iconic original MasterChef champion Julie Goodwin and last year's winner Nat Thaipun. The contestants have to choose between Julie's & Nat's ingredients.

Personally Depinder should have won tonight with her epic spread of Sadhya dishes. I don't always agree with the judges' decisions. Now Depinder & Sarah are vulnerable on Sunday along with Ben & Jamie. Sorry for the boys, but I want my girls in the Grand Finale.

With Callum & Laura safe, I'm hoping with all my heart that Depinder & Sarah get through the Elimination Challenge unscathed on Sunday. This would mean Ben or Jamie going home, which I am OK with.

It will be amazing to see the first MasterChef champion (Julie Goodwin) and last year's winner (Nat Thaipun) to bookend the night. I wonder what  Home Comforts are featured in the challenge, after which we will have the Top 5.

On Monday night, apparently there is a BYO Mystery Box, I've never seen that challenge before, I wonder what it involves. Callum & Laura are back in the contest after this weekend's Immunity.

Sadly, as of this week, the show is no longer screened on Wednesdays. They've got some other show taking its slot on that day. I guess the end is coming sooner than later.

Still, in a few months we will have Dessert Masters until next year's season of regular MasterChef

Since Pete Campbell had to leave this year because of his cancer, I would love to see him return as a contestant next year, and he would be my favourite to win. Of course, one day I would love to see Juan De La Cruz return.

Tonight on MasterChef, the first MC champion Julie Goodwin and last year's winner Nat Thaipun returned to the kitchens to set a challenge.

Julie & Nat each had their own set of ingredients which Depinder, Sarah, Ben & Jamie had to choose between. Remember, Laura & Callum won Immunity from this Elimination Challenge last week.

This challenge was split into 2 Rounds, the Bottom 2 dishes from Round 1 were sent to Round 2 from which someone would be Eliminated.

Round 1:

Depinder chose Nat's ingredients and made Thai Curry Ice Cream, Roti, Chilli Caramel & Lime Ginger Crumb which was a monumental flavour paradise for the senses.

Ben chose Nat's ingredients and made Pork Tortellini & Aromatic Thai Broth which was well-seasoned and well-balanced.
Sarah chose Julie's ingredients and made Confit-Glazed Chicken Wingettes, Potato Fondant & Leek Soubise. However her leek component was underdone and not emulsified enough.

Jamie chose Nat's ingredients and made Pork Dumplings, Aromatic Broth, Caviar & Finger Lime. However, his dish lacked balance and was too acidic.

The Bottom 2 were Sarah & Jamie who were sent to Round 2. However, this time, Sarah had to use Nat's ingredients while Jamie had to use Julie's ingredients.

Jamie tried to make gnocchi but he completely screwed it up and went on to his second choice for a dish. He made Charred Chicken, Pan Roasted Leek, Celeriac Puree, Chicken Jus, Spinach & Bay Oil which pleased the judges so he was sent back to safety.

This meant unfortunately we said farewell to Sarah who made Caviar & Pork Assiette (pork cooked three ways - ham, braised & crispy), but her flavours were awkward and unbalanced so she was Eliminated. This was so sad and heartbreaking, but Sarah and I are friends so I will always have that. Plus, we still have the lovely and talented Depinder in the contest!

Bye Sarah!

At the beginning of the current MasterChef season, the judges asked the contestants what they would add to a Mystery Box if they had a choice. I was curious about this request, but gave it no further thought for much of the duration of the season. I should have known there was a reason.

Well, tonight was the BYO Mystery Box. However, I assumed that meant it was a Bring Your Own Mystery Box, but it was a Build Your Own Mystery Box, with the ingredients the remaining contestants chose at the beginning and were finally given!

Depinder, Laura, Ben, Jamie & Callum had to only use these ingredients and the under the bench staples which meant the pantry and garden were out of bounds.

Tonight was also the LAST IMMUNITY of the season.

Bottom 2:

Ben made Beer Battered Oysters, Cured Venison, Oyster Cream, Guinness Caramel & Sorrel Garnish. His dish lacked balance and much needed acidity.

Jamie made Bacalao Al Pil Pil (Salted Cod, Garlic, Dried Chilli & Olive Oil), Razor Clams & Potato. However, his dish was far too salty in nearly every element with no respite.
