Tonight on MasterChef, the five ladies (Alana, Depinder, Laura, Sarah & Snezana) had to cook a dish inspired by first class travel on their way home from Qatar to Australia. It had to be a full main course, not an entree or dessert. Remember Ben, Callum & Jamie had all won Immunity this week along with one of these ladies.

 
Alana made Burnt Butter Moreton Bay Bugs, Saffron Buttermilk Sauce & Caviar which was well-received but ranked somewhere in the middle.

Depinder made Prawn Sukka Curry, Banana Flatbread, Coconut Yogurt, Tempered Rice & Mango Pachadi which received explosive rave reviews and ovations, making it one of the Top 2.

Laura made Ricotta & Mushroom Tortelloni, White Asparagus & Truffle which was also highly regarded, making it one of the Top 2.

Sarah had to abandon the original conception of her dish (Steak Tartare & Beetroot Ice Cream) since it was unworkable given the brief. Sadly her eventual dish Steak, Oysters, Cauliflower Puree & Flatbread was another flop as her steak was severely undercooked and could not be tasted or assessed. I am very worried for her at this stage of the contest. She is usually so amazing and solid.

Snezana also had to abandon the original conception of her dish (Scallops), since it was too basic given the brief. She eventually served up Pan Fried Sheri (Fish) Stuffed Peppers, Pomme Puree & Harissa Sauce which was well-received but ranked somewhere in the middle.

However, it was lovely and talented Depinder who won the coveted Immunity so she is safe from Sunday's Elimination with the boys. I am so delighted for her.
 
This sadly means that Sarah is vulnerable along with Alana, Laura & Snezana.
 
Sunday looks epic, apparently from the preview, Laura has a major meltdown and must be comforted by the other contestants. I don't know if this means that Laura is necessarily the one being sent home (they wouldn't give that big a spoiler so early on), but it certainly adds drama and once again shows the level of care and consideration given to and from contestants in need that elevates this series from every other reality show with all their backstabbing and bitchiness.

Coming up this week on MasterChef.

 

Sunday is the Dual Duel Challenge. As you know, Ben, Callum, Depinder & Jamie are all safe from Sunday's Elimination, having won Immunity last week.
 
Here are Alana & Sarah. I am guessing Round 1 will be someone from one team competing against someone from the other team, and the ones who don't win must compete against the other in Round 2 to see who is Eliminated.
 
The drama here will be Laura's meltdown and needing to be comforted by the others.

Monday is a Mystery Box and it's all about GARLIC!

Tuesday night is a Pressure Test and here is a fabulous dessert our contestants must recreate.

This is either an Immunity for Monday night's successful cooks or more likely it is an Elimination for Monday's unsuccessful cooks. If it is an Elimination, I would love to NOT see Depinder or Sarah have to play this challenge. If it is an Immunity, then the reverse is my desired outcome of course.

I have no idea what theme Wednesday night is but from the way judge Sofia Levin is beaming, it is sure to be epic! I am assuming it is also an Immunity.
 
Then we wait for next Sunday's Elimination which is the beginning of the last week before the Grand Finale.

Tonight on MasterChef was the Dual Duel Challenge for Elimination. 

 
Ben, Callum, Depinder & Jamie were safe as you know so the four contestants playing (Alana, Laura, Sarah & Snezana) were divided into teams, and given a key ingredient to cook with. The ones who lost from each team in Round 1 had to compete against each other in Round 2 to see who would be Eliminated.
 
 
Round 1:
 
 
 Alana Versus Sarah (Horseradish):
 
 
Alana made Horseradish Ice Cream, Fresh Plums, Almond Biscuit & Goat Cheese Cream & Celery Oil. She was warned that she had too many incohesive elements, both sweet and savoury all at once in her dish and because she failed to listen to the judges, her flavours clashed so she lost the round.

Sarah made Savoury Doughnuts, Caraway Salt, Horseradish Creme Fraiche, Red Wine Jus, Pea Puree & Beef Slices, winning the round with the dish that impressed the judges the most. Using only savoury elements made a cohesive dish.

*Although Alana made the dish that I would have actually eaten, Sarah is one of my favourites so I am delighted she won.
 
 
Laura Versus Snezana (Hazelnuts):
 
 
Laura made Hazelnut Financier, Braised Quandongs (Native Plums) & Salted Hazelnut Mascarpone, but her original idea of an accompanying Hazelnut Ice Cream failed dismally, it froze too hard and she couldn't offer a counterpoint to the overwhelming hazelnut fat in it so she had to discard that element altogether leading to an incomplete dish. This caused the emotional meltdown I told you about where the other ladies had to console and comfort her.

Snezana made Hazelnut Crusted Fish, Hazelnut Beurre Blanc, Celeriac Emulsion, Mushrooms & Carrots. This was the winning dish in his duel.
 
*Although Laura made the dish that I would have actually eaten, her dish was negatively compromised by one of her key elements being missed in the finished dish. She couldn't deliver what she promised and her final product lost cohesion, which sent her into the second round with Alana where they were given fennel seeds as a key ingredient.

Alana Versus Laura (Fennel Seeds):
 
 
Alana made Burnt Fennel Seed Meringue, Honey & Vanilla Cream Diplomat, Sour Cherry Sorbet, Kataifi Pastry & Marsala Strawberries.
 
 
Laura made Pickled Squid Tentacles, Squid & Fennel Noodles, Charred Fennel Dashi, Fennel Salt & Fennel Oil. She successfully overcame her emotional meltdown in round one and produced a winning and very cohesive dish.

Alana was warned once again that she had too many elements in her dish and once again she failed to listen to the judges, her flavours clashed again so she was Eliminated.

Tonight on MasterChef, the 7 contestants were given a large Mystery Box of garlic and a smaller Mystery Box with an unknown ingredient that they could not open or use until 30 minutes after they started cooking.

 
After the 30 minutes were up, they were allowed to open the small box which contained a different herb for each of them to add to their already established dish.
 
The bottom dish was Laura who was given chives with her garlic. She attempted to make Stuffed Lamb, Bagna Cauda (Garlic & Anchovy Sauce) & Lamb Marsala Jus. However, because she waited so long, tinkering with prep work, to get her lamb into the oven, it was severely undercooked and this would have sent her home on an Elimination night. No picture of this dish, it was kind of gross.
 
Sadly, my two favourites (Depinder & Sarah) were somewhere in the middle (along with Ben) so they didn't even win a chance to play for tomorrow night's Immunity, so I am hoping Wednesday night will feature another chance at Immunity and that at least one of my ladies wins it. I just want my Dream Team to stay safe until the Grand Finale.

Ben was given mint with his garlic. He made Pan Seared Garlic Scallops, Curried Cauliflower Puree & Lentils, Mint, Tomato & Cucumber Salad. The scallops were slightly undercooked though.

Depinder was given lemongrass with her garlic. She made Garlic Chicken, Paratha Flatbread & Garlic, Lemongrass & Chilli Chutney & Pickled Chilli & Lemongrass. However, as delicious as her curry was, the chilli overpowered the lemongrass in those elements.

Sarah was given dill with her garlic. She made what she affectionately called a Snot Block, a cheeky savoury spin on the classic vanilla slice. Her elements included Garlic Cream, Chicken Jelly, Dill & Cucumber Gel, Dill Salt & Dill Oil, and the pastry layers of course. The judges thought she could have amped up the chicken flavour just a tad though.

The Top 3 contestants who are playing for Immunity tomorrow are Callum, Jamie & Snezana.
 
 
Callum who was given thyme with his garlic made Garlic & Thyme Stuffed Chicken, Kohlrabi & Pine Mushroom Dumplings, Garlic Veloute & Thyme Oil. Personally I thought this whole dish was rather boring and uninspired.

Jamie who was given coriander with his garlic made Flathead, Confit Garlic, Confit Charred Leek, Nduja Mussel Sauce, Pickled Mussels, Coriander & Chive Oil & Leek Hay.

Tomorrow night, Callum, Jamie & Snezana must try to recreate guest chef Michael Wilson's Tower Of Terror dessert where the best one wins Immunity. Of the three I am hoping Snezana wins because to be honest, Callum & Jamie are not particularly interesting (same with Ben & Laura).
