Tonight on MasterChef was the Classic Pairs Elimination Challenge. The contestants had to choose one of the five following flavour combinations: 

 
Honey & Soy, Chilli & Lime, Pineapple & Coconut, Orange & Fennel and Maple & Bacon.
 
 
The contestants then had to make a dish with their chosen pair, sweet or savoury.
 
Annabel & Pat won Immunity last night so they did not need to compete tonight. 
 
 
The Best Dishes were made by: Lydia, Hannah, Casper & Aaron.

The Bottom 4 Dishes were made by Olaolu, Luke, Grace & Jackie.
 
 
Luke & Grace both chose orange & fennel and they both served fish that was dry and overcooked; Olaolu's Trifle was too simple for this stage of the contest and the judges could not get the full benefit of the coconut and pineapple (because of the rum which also negatively affected the sweetness); and Jackie's Fried Chicken & Soy Honey Glaze was too sweet as the honey took over from the soy.
 
 
In the end, the least favourable dish was that made by Olaolu who was sadly Eliminated. Bye Olaolu.
 
 
Tomorrow night is the Reese's Chocolate & Peanut Butter Cup Invention Test. The contestants will be cooking in pairs and the winning pair will win Immunity from Wednesday's Time Or Ingredients Elimination Challenge.
 
Vinnie was off sick tonight (he still has his Immunity Pin though) which usually means that he will have to automatically play in the next Elimination Challenge, regardless of whether the team he is in wins, unless he chooses to play his pin.

Tonight on MasterChef was inspired by - but not limited to - Reese's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, but the contestants were told they could use any chocolate and peanut combination and add other ingredients as long as peanuts and chocolate were the hero of the dish.
 
*Also they were specifically asked to make and serve 4 dishes of the same dessert. This will be important later on in this review.

 
Vinnie who was back, did not play tonight, therefore he has to automatically go into tomorrow night's Elimination Challenge because he missed the last one.

Everyone else was divided into 7 teams of 2 to make a dish. The teams were:
 
Emily & Jackie, Annabel & Hannah, Aaron & Jack, Casper & Petro, Dot & Pat, Alyona & Lydia, Grace & Luke.
 
 
*Normally I only post the smash hits, but since I am dessert crazy, I will post them all, even the middles and the duds.

The Best Dish - which was flawless - was made by: Dot & Pat - Chocolate Peanut Banoffee Pie & Whiskey Caramel Peanut Brittle. The harmonious balance of sweetness, saltiness and bitterness, the flavours, the execution were all perfect.

*Special Mention goes to Emily & Jackie and their Chocolate Peanut Fudge Ice Cream, Salted Caramel Sauce & Peanut Tuile & Peanut Crumble . I can't seem to make my mind up about Jackie, she can be either really good or really mediocre depending on the night, and tonight was a good night for her, although I wonder how much of that is because she was working with Emily who is admittedly the stronger contestant.

Casper & Petro sort of fell in the middle category. They made a Miso Salted Caramel Tart, Peanut Cremeux & Chocolate Shard. Unfortunately Casper cut himself on some broken glass and had to be patched up leaving Petro with the finishing and plating up, and while looks-wise, the dessert could have looked more refined and cleaner, the pastry and caramel were perfect.

Unfortunately there were a few clunkers, most notably: Grace & Luke, Alyona & Lydia and Annabel & Hannah.
 
 
Grace & Luke - Chocolate & Peanut Profiteroles, Peanut Whiskey Ice Cream & Chocolate Ganache. The ice cream was a huge hit but the choux pastry was chewy and soggy.

 Alyona & Lydia - Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake, Peanut Mascarpone, Chilli Caramel, Chocolate Peanut Disc & Chocolate Peanut Butter Crumb. Unfortunately, although they made a Vanilla Peanut Ice Cream, it did not set so it had to be left out but the cheesiness of the mascarpone messed with the other flavours and the ice cream was needed to cut through the denseness and strong flavours of everything else. Plus the crumb and cake were too doughy.

Annabel & Hannah - Peanut Chocolate Tart, Passionfruit Salted Caramel & Peanut Ice Cream. Unfortunately, the judges HAD asked for four dishes of the same dessert and they only made and served two, because they ran out of time working on some unnecessary elements, which means they missed the brief, so despite the flavours and textures, they did not deliver and ended up in the bottom.

The judges were looking for the 2 Bottom Teams (4 Contestants) to join Vinnie in tomorrow night's Time Or Ingredients Elimination Challenge. These were: Alyona & Lydia and Annabel & Hannah.
 
 
Grace & Luke managed a near squeak and missed the bottom only because the two other teams fared worse than they did since Alyona & Lydia served a  completely flawed dessert while Annabel & Hannah missed the brief.
 
Vinnie still has his Immunity Pin if he needs to use it, but the other 4 (Alyona, Annabel, Hannah & Lydia) are still vulnerable, although Vinnie could still go home if he chooses not to cash in his pin and makes the least impressive dish.

Tonight on MasterChef, it was the Time Or Ingredients Elimination Challenge played by the 4 contestants (Alyona, Annabel, Hannah & Lydia) who were in the Bottom last night, plus Vinnie (who missed the last Elimination and is obligated to play in this one). This game is slightly different from the Time Auction Challenge which will most likely be coming up very soon where they actually use time as currency to "purchase ingredients".
 
In THIS challenge, the 5 contestants were shown various cloches at various 15 Minute time intervals and had to decide whether to accept the ingredients on offer or wait until more were revealed although that meant they would have less time to actually cook. When a contestant made a choice of ingredients they were not allowed to use any set of ingredients shown after their bid but they could use everything available before their bid.
 
The pantry and garden were closed but they were able to use the under the bench staples. 
 
 
Vinnie chose to use his Immunity Pin.
 
 
This left Alyona, Annabel, Hannah & Lydia to fight for their spot.
 

*Here is the rundown of who chose which set of ingredients and what time they then had to cook:
 
Cloche 1: 75 Minutes (Herbs, Spices & Alliums - Lydia)
Cloche 2: 60 Minutes (Fruits & Vegetables - Annabel & Hannah)
Cloche 3: 45 Minutes (Condiments & Flavour Bombs - No Takers)
Cloche 4: 30 Minutes (Seafood - Alyona)
 
 
*I will share all 4 dishes, the hits and the duds.

Alyona decided to hold out until ALL the ingredients were shown. Although she had access to All 4 Cloches, this also means that she would have the least amount of cooking time (30 Minutes). She made Braised Scallops, Miso Cauliflower Puree, Pickled Apple & Shallots & Herb Anchovy Sauce.

The Top 2 were: Alyona & Hannah.
 
Alyona produced a vibrant and flavourful plate of seafood, all the more impressive because of her time restraints. This was the TOP DISH.
 
Hannah was going to add a lime & bay leaf element to her cake, but she was warned by Judge Poh not to take on too many elements and thankfully she listened. Her dish was well presented and delicious and sang with flavour.
 
 
The Bottom 2 were Annabel & Lydia.
 
Annabel's dish was not cohesive and there were elements that clashed with each other, plus the dish was too simple for this stage of the contest. The judges thought it was basically fancied-up "chips and dip".
 
Although Lydia had the longest time, she royally screwed up the tart pastry (making the wrong type of pastry for the nature of the dish) and her onions lacked the depth of flavour she was hoping for. The pastry was the worst fault and it completely crumbled apart and looked like a sandy mess instead of a well constructed pie crust.
 
 
The least impressive dish was obviously made by Lydia who was Eliminated. Bye Lydia!

It's that time of the week where we won't have any more MasterChef until Sunday. They usually show a brief glimpse of the next week's events, although we know next week's theme is Aussie Classics and the guests include Robert Irwin & Curtis Stone.
 
I'll let you know what specific challenges and guests our remaining contestants will face when the updates are revealed.
 
Not counting the original 36 would-be contestants sent home from the Audition Rounds, from the 24 official chosen contestants, we now have only 14 contestants remaining. 
 
There will be 11 more Eliminations, then there is the Semi-Final where someone will go home with an instant 3RD Prize of usually $10,000, and then there will be the Grand Finale where the Top 2 will battle it out for the 1ST Prize (the trophy, the title of MasterChef Australia 2026 & $250,000) and the 2ND Prize of usually $40,000.
 
Then we wait until 2027 for the next season.
