Hey Guys

 
I thought I would get back into my MasterChef reviews this week (last week was just way too hard as you can understand) but friends have told me it's not a selfish or bad thing to get back into living and enjoying things.
 
This week on MasterChef features a whole new round of challenges designed by our esteemed judges (Sofia Levin, Jean-Christophe Novelli, Andy Allen & Poh Ling Yeow).
 
Tonight Sofia gave the 6 contestants a choice of 4 ingredients which they can combine with the under the bench staples (the pantry and garden were closed). Here are the ingredients and the contestants who chose them.
 
 
Almonds - NO TAKERS
Beetroots - Annabel & Petro 
Onions - Aaron & Vinnie
Yuzu Citrus - Casper & Luke
 
 
The maker of the best dish would win Immunity from tomorrow night's Elimination Challenge set by Jean-Christophe.

Annabel: Beetroot Cruller, Buttermilk & Beetroot Ripple Ice Cream, Beetroot Caramel. Unfortunately, the problem was the doughnut itself, the oiliness and the inconsistent cook were at odds with the other flavours.

Casper: Salted Yuzu Cruller, Yuzu Jam & White Pepper Creme Anglaise. Unfortunately, the doughnut was raw inside.

Luke: Yuzu Meringue Crepe Cake. At least that's what it was supposed to be. As you can see, not only did the crepe cake collapse, but the meringue was a melted mess. He also failed to use enough yuzus to get the juice to make the curd flavourful enough.

Petro: Roasted Beetroot, Homemade Ricotta, Fried Beetroot Leaves, Beetroot & Whey Sauce. The dish lacked earthiness and sweetness leaving the dish too mellow and lacklustre.

Both of these dishes were perfect. One dish had just a bit more depth of flavour and that made all the difference. The winner of the Immunity from tomorrow was Vinnie! Congratulations to Vinnie who is automatically the first contestant in the Top 5.

 

Also coming up this week - Jean-Christophe's Sauces (Elimination), Keeping Up With Andy (Immunity) and Poh's Pressure Test (Elimination).
 
After this week we will have 4 contestants and soon it will be the Semi-Finals & Grand Finale. Then we wait until next year.
 
I am hoping and confident that 2027 will be a much better year in a personal sense for me all round.

Tonight on MasterChef, Judge Jean-Christophe set the Elimination Challenge which was all about French Sauces.

 
Vinnie won Immunity last night, so Aaron, Annabel, Casper, Luke & Petro had to make a dish featuring one of two sauces - espagnole & veloute.

Aaron - Prawns, Scallops & Mussels, Veloute Sauce. The seafood was undercooked and the sauce was too salty.

Casper - Cod Veloute, Fennel Puree & Zucchini Salad. Unlike Annabel's fish, the char on Casper's fish overpowered everything else and the sauce was unbalanced with flavours that did not combine well.

Luke - Spiced Lamb Rack, Roasted Figs, Radicchio & Orange Espagnole. The sauce was too sweet and there was a massive hunk of fat on the lamb that he neglected which ruined the eating experience.

The Top 5 (Aaron, Annabel, Casper, Petro & Vinnie) have to hustle to Keep Up With Andy in tomorrow's Immunity Challenge and then run the gauntlet of Poh's Pressure Test Elimination on Wednesday before starting the lead up to the Semi-Final & Grand Finale coming very soon.

The contestants had to recreate one of Andy's signature dishes (BBQ Lamb, Confit Garlic, Caramelised Eggplant Cream & Braised Borlotti Beans). They had no recipe and didn't even know what the dish looked or tasted like. They just had to follow everything Andy did and try to keep up.

There were several flaws from the quintet, from burned eggplant, undercooked lamb, scarcity of beans, forgetting the capers and sauce that was not reduced or seasoned enough. 
 
However, the best version of the dish was made by Vinnie who won Immunity for the second time in a row this week. Congratulations Vinnie!

Tonight on MasterChef, with the exception of Vinnie who won Immunity last night, 4 contestants (Aaron, Annabel, Casper & Petro) had to recreate Judge Poh Ling Yeow's trio of Malaysian Treats in an epic Pressure Test Elimination.

They had to recreate Poh's Spiral Curry Puff, Kuih Lapis (multi-layered rainbow coloured steamed dessert) & Kuih Koci (banana leaf-wrapped rice flour and palm sugar-pandan-coconut dumplings).

The contestant whose dish least resembles Poh's trio of snacks would be sent home. 
 
 
All of Aaron's dishes were perfect and flawless. He had Top Dish(es).
 
 
Petro's Kuih Lapi was missing layers and some of the layers that were present were raw inside. He did well with the Curry Puffs, and although his Kuih Koci were not wrapped very well, the filling was sound.
 
Casper's Curry Puffs were cracked and oily, his Kuih Koci were slightly underdone, but his Kuih Lapi was perfect.
 
Annabel's Kuih Lapi had undercooked and pasty layers that melded together when they should have been clearly defined and her Kuih Koci were raw because they were severely undercooked because of her mismanagement of time. Her Curry Puffs were perfect though.
