Mattel says becoming the first company to bring Skeletor, a branded character to the AI Sora platform is a “willingness to explore new creative possibilities.”

Last year, Mattel announced they were partnering with OpenAI (owners of ChatGPT, Sora and more) to “see what they can do to bring product ideas to life more quickly” per OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The OpenAI CEO explained “(Mattel’s) designers can now start with a sketch and then turn these early concepts into something that you can see and share and react to“.

Well this month it was revealed that OpenAI assisting Mattel designers to bring early concepts to life was not the full extent of their partnership.

Mattel has now become the first company to bring a licensed character to Sora 2 (a next-generation TikTok-style, AI social network where users can create shorts using AI-generated characters and voices.) That licensed character is Skeletor.

Steve Totzke, President and Chief Commercial Officer at Mattel, explained their landmark decision to toybook:

STEVE TOTZKE: "We continue to make progress on our strategic collaboration with OpenAI, with a clear focus on safe, age-appropriate experiences that enhance play rather than replace it.

"Becoming the first company to bring a branded character — Skeletor from Masters of the Universe — to the Sora 2 platform reflects our willingness to explore new creative possibilities while maintaining the trust families have placed in Mattel for more than 80 years."

Over the past couple years, we have reported that Mattel hasn’t shied away from using AI as a tool in packaging and toy design.

How deep will Mattel incorporate artificial intelligence into their business model as time goes on? Only time will tell.

We’ll see you next time.

    1. @sketchyskeletor It sucks for people who want to do certain jobs as adults. I want to go to college and become a teacher, but I’m scared they’ll have AI teachers by then. I hate how they shove AI down our throats.

I wouldn’t worry about it one bit. Almost every claim about AI is fake and even where it has a practical application like medical scans it can’t be trusted because funnily enough it still relies on computer language that we created from scratch instead of it developing over eras like our own. From top to bottom it’s untrustworthy and riddled with flaws. Investment has already plateaued at every stage, from gold diggers to businesses.

I cannot wait for the bubble to burst, but it is probably going to be a painful couple of years before that happens.
