Back on February 3rd, we reported that Marlene Sweet, wife of Roger Sweet, one of the legendary creators behind the vintage “Masters of the Universe” brand, had started a GoFundMe fundraising campaign.
Marlene had informed us that around the time her husband celebrated his 90th birthday last year, Roger was diagnosed with dementia. Since then, Roger had suffered a terrible fall, and because he was in a high risk of continually falling, the doctors determined he needed to be in a memory care facility (which is really quite expensive.)

Well today, we are extremely happy to report that Marlene has exceeded her financial goal of $50,000 (partially due to the recent press Marlene’s plea received thanks to the reporting of TMZ.)
At press time, the Sweet family has received $65,757 in donations, including a $5,000 donation from the Mattel Corporation

Donations are deeply appreciated by the Sweet family and it is a way that “Masters of the Universe” fans can give back to a creator of a brand that has already given so much to us.
Best wishes to the Sweet Family.
(Special thanks to Shawn)

I’m so happy they reached and even passed the goal. I grew up with MOTU, and as an adult I continued to collect the figures; I owe these toys so many happy moments in my life and now in the life of my son… and that’s an effect of what Mr. Sweet, and other creators, started. Thank you!
Good news. Well deserved.
Only 5K Mattel?
@caliban Mattel is so cheap – this reflects rather badly on them. How much money did they make off Roger’s vision?
Am I right in thinking it was around a billion dollars in toy sales alone, never mind licencing?
Say at least the best part of a billion dollars total once you factor in everything. And that’s in 1980s money! (Forbes actually says as much as 350 million annually just for the toyline)

This is it, I’ve just seen a claim it was making $400m a year. It’s very hard to know what the original numbers were from the Google results I’ve seen and what simply got adapted and adopted for today. But either way, billions in total!
We ❤️ u Roger
