Back in September, per our very reliable resident insider, we reported on a scoop that the next installment of the critically acclaimed Kevin Smith Masters of the Universe trilogy will be a “comic event” and not an animated series.

Well now, the man himself, Kevin Smith finally confirmed this while speaking with SerienJunkies recently. Here is what Kevin had to say (translated from German):
“I think we’re going to adapt this season into a comic book.”
Continuing the next season in comic form is no surprise to longtime readers of He-Mania.com.

We have long since reported that “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” struggled to gain enough ratings to support a sequel much like “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” Part 2 did (which is why Netflix analytics demanded the episode count for “Revolution” to be reduced from 10 to 5.)

Yet, even among the disappointing ratings, Kevin Smith still continues to point to DreamWorks (the media rights owner of She-Ra) for not playing ball as the reason for the series not continuing. That is still his narrative today:
‘The story we wanted to tell was complicated by the fact that Mattel doesn’t own the She-Ra character. For some reason, it’s with DreamWorks. Our third season was supposed to be about Adam’s sister returning. But DreamWorks and Mattel don’t work together very well. I find that strange: if there’s money to be made, why wouldn’t they do it?’
Of course, Mattel and DreamWorks recently did exactly that, working together to strike a sweeping deal that permitted Mattel Studios to use Filmation assets and She-Ra in the new “Masters of the Universe” Movie (and in a sequel if the studios desired to greenlight one.)

Whatever the problem, Kevin Smith hopes a new season in comic form will help change hearts and minds, and allow the showrunner to continue his He-Man show in animation again one day.
“Hopefully, that will get things moving. Maybe they’ll loosen the agreement so we can make our third season the way we wanted: with She-Ra.”
Wishful thinking or not, at least the next chapter in the Masters of the Universe: Revelation & Revolution saga will continue… even if it’s not in the format Kevin Smith (and the fans) were hoping for.
We’ll see you next time.

Wonder why Dreamworks isn’t willing to work with them? Especially after the movie cameo. Seems like such a missed opportunity.
