Is there a “MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE” Movie EXTENDED CUT in our Future? Director Travis Knight says 3 hours was edited down to the film’s final runtime (including things he deeply loved.)

The same day the brand new “Masters of the Universe” Movie was released in cinemas across the world, home video pre-order links were also made available in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD formats.

While we know the formats, the special feature details are still shrouded in mystery… including if there will be an extended cut of the film.

Why we stress a potential extended cut is SFX Magazine was able to confirm that a number of scenes from the live-action movie ended up on the cutting room floor. What they reported was “more than three hours of footage was edited down to the film’s final run-time

This is what director Travis Knight had to say about it:

TRAVIS KNIGHT: “There’s a lot of stuff that we had to excise to get the film into the shape it is now; a lot of stuff that I truly, deeply loved. There are giant scenes in the movie that aren’t there any longer. I am very proud of the movie, but there are definitely things that I love that we had to cut. Hopefully, they will get to see the light of day at some point.”

Hopefully indeed.

  1. I would be down to it. I was surprised how quickly the movie felt it was over considering its runtime.
While I do not think it really needs it I would love to see more of it. I could imagine the prison escape scene had been a tad longer originally; it felt a bit weird for a second or two. i.e. when they all started coughing I almost expected a Stinkor surprise attack.

    1. I did too and it almost felt weird that they didn’t address what the smell was. Did they? Did I miss something?

Not that I’m aware off. IIRC first the good guys coughed, then the bad guys, then they fought. The whole transition between prison and fighting in front of Grayskull felt a bit too fast.

    2. #ReleaseTheKnightCut!
Haha, yes, I would definitely be down to see an extended version of this movie!

I’m pretty sure they were just coughing on the stone dust from destroying the wall. It was basically a joke about interrupting the triumphant moment. I’d personally just as soon have left out that whole coughing bit, and the fact that people were misinterpreting it as Stinkor and disappointed when he didn’t show, kinda just reaffirms my feelings on that one! 😅

    1. I want this extended cut. A lot of things and characters felt like they needed to be fleshed out more, and an extra 50 (!!) minutes of run time would definitely be one way of doing that…

Yeah, I would certainly be down for a “Zack Snyder" style uncut, 3+ hour MOTU 2026.
Many of these characters needed more screen time, and with the extras left intact, the pacing might not feel as scattered.

  2. Can I just mention how I kinda love how the movie portrays Skeletor as just an evil dude, no tragic backstory? I mean I would’ve been fine either way if they showed him as Keldor or not, but the fact that they didn’t I think was for the best with how they portray him as a threatening force to be reckoned with one minute and the next he’s acting awkward or throwing childish insults.
It’s like Travis Knight saw how tiring complex “attempting to make them sympathetic" villain backstories in film franchises were becoming (Disney is ruining all their classic iconic villains with the Live-action remakes/spin-offs by making Cruella De Ville’s hatred for dogs stemming from the fact that they indirectly caused her mother’s death and Scar hated Mufasa because he stole the girl he wanted, I shit you not) and just scrapped all of the Keldor stuff at least for this movie and leaned a little more into Skeletor’s campy meme-ish status younger audiences know him more for. This was honestly a great call because can’t a villain just be an evil villain in a movie anymore?
Yeah I’m convinced they shot a bunch of Keldor flashbacks then cut them because of it. Why else would they cast Leto? Who looks like Keldor? I mean there’s another reason why they were cut for the better if we don’t have to see Leto’s face.

Now take my word on this because what my source is is goddamn twitter, but it has some credence to it. I read a comment saying from some user saying that they know someone who saw a test screening of the movie, it featured the cut Keldor stuff and him being turned to Skeletor by making a deal with Scareglow who was apparently played by Frank Langella (would explain why he has a Chronicles figure). Again it’s twitter, but I think there’s more than enough evidence.

Also does anyone remember of some set photos from a year ago showing a mural of Bow and I think it was Frosta there too? And also a while back a cast listing had a “Horde Soldier" listed. I think those were likely in the deleted scenes.

K, I looked back, it was Bow, King Hiss, Zodac, Perfuma and Netossa yeah this no doubt was in a deleted scene

  3. Hm… 3 hours! Wow! I’m ALL IN with that! That would be perfect when the movie is starting on Amazon Streaming. I loved the movie in cinema. I was near dropping some tears when Adam becomes the first time He-Man in Live Action! It was so funny that day, that the movie felt very short. Everything which makes much fun feels short. I would like to see more scenes with Moss-Man (maybe a real dialog with someone?^^), Tri Klops, Karg, and the Sorceress, some more intensive fight scenes and more of Eternia itself. 😄

  4. I guess this is what Travis Knight meant when he said he “couldn’t fit Mer-Man into the movie". They went through the trouble of creating a full practical, prosthetic costume for an actor, so they wouldn’t do that unless he was intended to be in the movie, so I guess all his scenes were cut. Another reason we need that uncut version…
