I can't really put my finger on it but I've never loved this episode. I can't tell you anything that's wrong with it, it just never fully hit for me. Maybe it's because of how Evilseed did the team-up concept, I don't know.
But one thing I'll say about this episode (and Season 2 in general) is how much grander a lot of things feel. When I first revisted episodes a few years ago, I found that I remember most of the plots of a lot of Season 1 episodes, but a lot of my memories of Season 2 and 3 came from specific shots - like in this one with all the Heroic and Evil Warriors standing together, the heroes chained up outside of Snake Mountian in "The Rainbow Warrior", or He-Man fighting Mer-Man underwater in "Jacob and the Widgets." for example. They definitely have moved to more interesting and unique shots, and the shots of the palace make it feel bigger, and I feel there are a lot more background characters and crowds when you would expect them.
Amazon Prime judged added a He-Man MOTU channel! Playing Filmation 24/7!
Have mentioned this many times before but some of my favorite episodes are the ones with a good variety of characters. I'm betting back in the 80s these types of episodes would make kids want more of the toys after seeing these guys all together on screen.
This is no exception. Classic heroes and villains team up story.
At one point early in the episode, Adam assumes that Skeletor has been "destroyed" as in killed and I'm thinking "Okay so they assume Skeletor may be dead, I know this is a weird moment where Whiplash tells them about another threat, but why isn't anyone acting a little jovial at the thought Skel might be gone for good?"
I know kids show but still 😆
I know this was a cartoon trope that started existing a while after this show, but part of me wishes Skeletor saved He-Man at the end with the mindset "If anyone's going to destroy He-Man, it's going to be me!" then he would be questioned by his minions and he would just tell them to shut up and he'll never do it again.
These last 2 episodes have been bangers! And the more I see "The Collector," the more I think I need to add the toy to my...well...collection! 🙂
I do agree that Sh'Gora's design detracted from the show, but lots of fun to be had here.
This is one of my favourites - it's a great ep anyway, but I properly love Skeletor's line about Grayskull: "I know the way, He-Man; I've been there before." Makes me laugh every time.
5 stars. Skeletor is a classic here. Great script, great pacing, big cast. Just fires on all cylinders.
