The movie looks good but the Predator looks goofy.

Still unsure about this one....

As it is, I'm way more interested in Warrior of Warriors right now.

Did you notice the Weyland-Yutani corporation logo on the equipment?  New Alien vs Predator coming?

@lordofdestruction The AVP comics are good but the AVP movies are not the best. Maybe this time they can make us a good one.

I want to see that too. 2025 could be the year of the Predator.

@asterstar I actually liked the first AVP movie overall, but yeah AVP Requiem was a plotless gorefest of garbage. The concept of Alien vs Predator is good so I'd like to see another attempt at it on the big screen.

There's little wrong with AvP, it's just from a time when people went along with the dumb herd's view. Requiem is a disgrace though, only bested in that sense by Covenant! And even that might have been trounced by Romulus... all told I'd rather Predator was kept away from Alien right now, and tbh I wasn't blown away by the Badlands trailer at all. Warrior almost looks like a PS2 cutscene!

I saw Badlands earlier today and was thoroughly impressed.

I wasn't sure how I was going to react to Yautjas speaking throughout the entire film, but they make it work and the way in which it's done suits the Predators well. (It also sets up a boatload of future possibilities...)

It was also a bit weird rooting for the Predator this time around, but again, they make it work by setting it all up from the Predator (Dek's) point of view... plus, it was a bit of a refreshing take after all of the garbage that was pushed out after Predator 2...

The CGI is MUCH better than I thought it was going to be (even though the alien landscapes and creatures look incredibly ho-hum) and the action set-pieces are really well executed. Even the humor is not overdone (something I was afraid of.) However, there is one aspect I could have done without - but it turns out to be a major plot point, so I can give it a partial pass.

Somehow, Dan Trachtenberg has taken a sinking ship and put it back on course by taking the helm of the Predator franchise. First Prey, then Killer of Killers, and now Badlands... each one a different approach to the tried and true Predator mythology and each one a commercial success.

Too bad the same can't be said of the godawful Alien franchise. That series ended after Aliens... everything after is utter and complete dog crap, IMO.

@ornclown Alien needs their own Dan Trachtenberg.

This is my quick non-spoiler review. Predator Badlands is the best Predator movie since the original. It's better than the first movie depending on what you want in a Predator movie. The special effects are amazing. The score is amazing. It's exciting. It's a 1980's Predator comic brought to life. Don't be fooled by the PG-13 rating. There is gore. There is severed limbs and decapitations but because it all is done to monsters and androids it's not rated R. GO SEE IT! You won't be disappointed.

It felt like a Star Wars movie if you ask me. A good Star Wars movie.

I agree with this.

Especially the part about the comic book brought to life. I have been a fan of the Dark Horse books since their inception, and while there are plenty of sub-par and just plain awful Predator comics, the good ones are truly good - and lore creating.

The original line of comics don't get the credit that they're due... I mean, the writers of those stories helped craft the Yautja mythology all those years ago!

Also, it would be great if the Alien franchise gets their own Trachtenberg... however, I feel like that whole property is beyond redemption now. They have made error after error, and drifted away from everything that made the first two films (and early comic books) so incredible.

The ridiculousness of the whole "engineer" angle is so massively stupid that it obliterated any joy that I could possibly have gleaned from this franchise. For me, it's Alien, Aliens, and the stories found in the first Dark Horse Aliens Omnibus. Nothing more.

I thought Prey was great but Killer of Killers absolutely fucked the Predator franchise and now it's canon. We already know Dan is talking to certain actors to bring them back, meaning the mere concept of consequence has gone out the window and we're in full Marvel territory. Also, similarly, we're back to writers from decades ago getting their ideas pinched without credit while Dan outright denies it. Which I consider pretty nasty. And said lore needs to be introduced bit by bit anyway, This isn't 'move fast and break stuff'. We know how that went with the Star Wars prequels.

I also don't think tying in with Alien when trying to resurrect Predator is remotely intelligent, as you say Alien is wrecked now.

Late to the party, but I wanted to add another positive comment for this movie. Trachtenberg is 3-for-3 in my opinion when it comes to Predator sequels. I'm not steeped in Predator comic lore but the original film is a defining film for me. So seeing how he's pulled the franchise up out of the depths is encouraging. I didn't have a problem with the Predator being the protagonist in this one. There are lots of shows and films where we are meant to root for the bad guy. I saw the "twist" pretty early on, but I was good with that. I really liked it and I agree with Asterstar--my favorite film since the original.

I agree. I am excited to see what Trachtenberg does next... (I would actually love a 1:1 adaptation of the Dark Horse Aliens vs. Predator book - except now, we have an actual Yautja language, so the scenes in which the Predators interact would work even better on the big screen.)

However, while I actually think this movie is easily one of the better sci-fi flicks in recent memory, I still say that Prey is the best Predator film since the original... with this just a hair behind. (Also, special recognition for Predator 2, mostly because it is such a corny period piece that lives in my nostalgic conscious, lol.)

This video does an extensive look at the newest Predator figures from Neca - based on Badlands:

These look pretty cool... I really want to get both Dek and Thia so I can display them together like in the first half of the movie...
