@andy_wan_kenobi you remember correctly. Also Smith is probably only privy info about cartoon right and not toy rights.

Confused Cringer

Uhhhh guys? You got me very confused with your responses. Kevin actually says figures. The She-Ra figures are owned by Mattel but (animated) She-Ra is owned by DreamWorks.” Kevin said he was told over and over again. It probably came from Rob David who worked with him on the show and is a vice president at Mattel. I have to think that guy would know something about it.

@he-dad oh it does say figures, my bad. That doesn't change the fact that Mattel owns they toy and character rights. I'm pretty sure DreamWorks has animation and distribution rights. But they have to use it or they can lose it.

ADORA!!!

Can it be...after so long?

I am losing my mind over the beautiful card art!!! And Catra's face at least looks pretty and stern, like it did on the show. Very exciting.

I need these figures now...but I'm not seeing any CC POP on Anazon.ca so...does anyone know their walmart item numbers??

I don't think Dreamworks or any company that buys the Filmation rights to She-Ra has to use it or lose it my man. She-Ra was only used once in 40 years and they still got it.

@he-dad I'm not 100% sure, but using it has some strange stipulations. There was a company that had film right to the Fantastic Four, and made a movie with no plan to release it just to keep the rights. Also releasing a DVD counts was a use, possibly even putting it on a streaming platform. But they still may not have rights to the vintage characters just distribution rights and rights to any new characters or redesigns that they create. These laws are very complex in the US and I only have a very basic understanding.

But from all the context clues we have, it seems that mattel owns the rights to the characters from the vintage shows, but not the distribution rights to the show and not any of the characters or redesigned characters from newer shows.

Obviously, without being privy to contracts all of this discussion is speculation.  That said, Filmation never owned She-Ra. It was and remains wholely owned by Mattel. Filmation licensed certain rights from Mattel to develop and distribute an animated series based on certain characters. At some point, due to either time or lack of use over time, those rights reverted back to Mattel, who would eventually license them to Dreamworks for for the recent series. There will be a reversion/termination clause innthat contract. It could be triggered by a passage of time (x number of years), or it could triggered by a certain period of inactivity (x number of years with out new product), or it could be triggered by not enough product in a certain time frame (x number of series/episodes/movies in y number of years). They could be extended and/or renegotiated for additional money. Eventually, though, the rights will return to Mattel. And at some point, they will be licensed again.

I heard Filmation co-created She-Ra with Mattel and that is why they own the television She-Ra rights outright. The only reason why Dreamworks owns it now is because Hallmark purchased the Filmation library and then Classic Media purchased it and then Dreamworks purchased Classic Media.

I don't think these new figures are on Walmart yet. They are too new. Did you change your mind about getting She-Ra? I love her! My only complaint is she needed to be a little taller.

You are correct. They both created it. Substantially so. Filmation employee Larry DiTillio was the one who came up with the name She-Ra.

Oh I was never *not* going to get her 🙂 I just wish she was better designed.

I thought these were supposed to end up at Walmarts?

@disneyboy I saw the She-Ra wave in my Walmart but it depends on the Walmart. Some are great with stocking the latest toys and some are shitty. Target is that way too. Hit or miss.

I just checked Mattel Creations release schedule for Dec.  Nothing for MOTU. I was hoping Rio-Blast would go up for sale. Is 1 Vintage Collection figure per month really too much to ask for??? I had 0 interest in Demo-Man or Geldor, I've been waiting for Rio-Blast. And now 2024 is over.

6 releases for Hot Wheels
1 for Barbie
0 for MOTU

How come MOTU can never have 6 releases in 1 month? Hell, 4 releases (1 full wave) would be nice!

@sci-fitsunami I'd love a figure a month but here in the UK that means £9 shipping each time and waiting weeks for delivery!

@sci-fitsunami MOUT isn't the power house that Barbie and Hot Wheels are. Also Hot Wheels are much cheaper to produce and one car and cost more than a single Origins figure.

Could you please tell me what their Walmart item number is?? Or SKU? For She-Ra and Mantenna?

It should say on the shelf sticker. It'd really help me, thanks!

Someone posted this pic from a Walmart in Oregon. I think the peg tag over the vintage She-Ra is what you are looking for because if you zoom in it says cartoon.

I got my Modulok yesterday. It is not labeled cartoon collection anywhere so it was just Mattel being stupid.

@samuel or Mattel being clever. Labeling it as Cartoon Collection makes retailers (Amazon) believe they have something from the latest assortment.

@smitty-81  I was also thinking that maybe it's because you can use the parts to make the Filmation version or it can just be the toy version.

You guys think Mattel finally dropped the hammer on Paulmartstore? It looks like their illegal supply was cut off the last few months.
