“Masters of the Universe” continues to have the Power as it tops Amazon Prime Video for a third day in a row.
After the film’s worldwide exclusive debut on Amazon this past Wednesday, according to the analytics of Flix Patrol, here is how the Top 10 Movies in the World currently ranks:

Total viewership, in terms of the total audience — not just the loyal MOTU fan base — is abysmal. In a normal scenario, a sequel would be unlikely without a film making 200% to 300% of its production budget in worldwide box office order to break even for the cost of the budget, marketing, etc. That said, this is Amazon we’re talking about and since Amazon owns 18% of the world (joking) anything is possible. 😉

Look, I get it. It’s fun, if delusional, to fine the movie at #1 in any metric. But the reality is “Amazon Prime Video contributes 0% to a film’s official worldwide box office revenue. Box office gross strictly measures theatrical ticket sales, whereas streaming views, subscription allocations, and platform windows operate on entirely separate financial models that are not publicly tracked or added to theater tallies."
And just for the record, it breaks my heart that the film. didn’t do well. I think it was a perfect storm of a release that had it pitted against unbeatable competition, too small of a fan base — although a passionate one — and the undeniable fact that the super-hero genre has become oversaturated. How many times can we watch heroes, even our most beloved one, saving the universe? 🙁
What unbeatable competition did it have? Back Rooms? Scary Movie 57? Those films cater to an entirely different audience. As for watching heroes save the world, haven’t we been watching that for many decades now? The first live action Batman film was made in 1941, and I don’t think it was a smash hit at the time and is barely remember today. Should Hollywood have just given up and thrown their hands up and said, “Yeah, this Batman thing isn’t going anywhere!"
The competition doesn’t have to be from the same genre. Success in the marketplace is success regardless of where it comes from. Sadly, the same is true of failure.
