A PASSING OF A GREAT: Roger Sweet, one of the fathers of He-Man, has passed away on “Masters of the Universe Day”. (We’re Pursuing a Movie Dedication)

We have some sad news to report. We were notified about 7 hours ago that Roger Sweet died this morning on Masters of the Universe Day, at the age of 91.

Roger Sweet was one of the legendary creators behind the vintage “Masters of the Universe” brand.

Most notable for coming up with the name “He-Man” among many other great contributions, Roger Sweet’s health recently took a turn for the worse earlier in the year, so much so that his wife Marlene Sweet started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Roger’s medical bills.

Marlene and Roger Sweet

The outreach and support for Marlene and Roger was wonderful, exceeding their goals, so much so that Marlene sent HE-MANIA.COM a thank you letter to publish in late February. Here was that letter:

"To all the incredible He-Man fans out there -
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your caring and support for Roger Sweet,
He has always loved that his creation lead to a whole world of fantasy and fun for so many kids,
Growing up - he always wanted to BE a powerful he-man, but instead was a rather good athlete in gymnastics and track and field. He kept up with staying in shape all his life, until this dementia took over. At 88 years old, he could still do "planking".
Most of us do not fully understand that long-term memory care is not covered by Medicare.
So when this is a need, we are left trying to cover the costs, which are astounding.
Hopefully this will change in the future.
For now, we are SO grateful for all the support from caring fans from all over!!
THANK YOU ALL.
Very Sincerely
Marlene Sweet"

But now, unfortunately, Roger Sweet has passed away, peacefully at his care facility this morning.

Marlene Sweet has asked that we try to reach out to the Amazon MGM, the studio behind the “Masters of the Universe” Movie, to request that they dedicate the film not only to Roger Sweet, but Mark Taylor as well.

This gesture is absolutely amazing, honoring and uniting two MOTU greats that unfortunately were never able to unite late in life.

HE-MANIA.COM will be actively working on this request to honor them both. Hopefully it isn’t too late.

Our condolences go out to Marlene and the rest of the Sweet family.

Rest in Peace Roger.

  1. Well I’m the first one to post in this forum, so I’m just gonna say this

I’ve only been in the fandom for a year compared to probably two or three decades like a lot of you. I have come to know lots and lots about this franchise and have collected countless figures in only more than a year, but I’m not what I would call an Ultra fan yet who knows at least 90% of the important things. Giving myself a few more years.

Nonetheless when Mattel wanted to rival their biggest mistake, Kenner Star Wars aka saying no to the toy rights to some stupid space movie a guy named George was making in 1976 and their new toyline needed a name for the main character, sometimes a very simple yet unique name is all a hero protagonist needs.

    He-Man

    Paying my respects

    Rest in peace Mr. Sweet

  2. One of the architects of our childhoods.
A dedication is not only a respectful thing to do, but a necessary tribute to one of MOTU’s founding fathers.
I agree… both Sweet and Taylor deserve a memorial in the film.

    Good Journey, Roger.

  3. I am so sad to hear of the recent passing of Roger Sweet (the creator of Masters Of The Universe and by extension Princess Of Power, New Adventures Of He-Man and later parts of the franchise). It is these wonderful creations that not only inspired my love for fantasy and science fiction but also helped shape my lifelong ideology regarding equality and humanity in a world without hateful bigotry and learning to be kind to others. His legacy will not be forgotten, by myself or other fans. Another reason to watch the new movie in June, to keep the magic and lessons learned in my heart forever.🥹😍

  4. R.I.P. I meet Roger at a Power-Con. He was very nice. I thought the same of Mark Taylor when I met him. I always thought it was a shame that they had a feud. They both deserve credit for being the fathers of MOTU. I agree with dedicating the movie to them.
