“Return to Skull Island” comics blazes trail for continuation of the “Masters of the Universe: Revelation & Revolution” Netflix Series Narrative

Fans of the “Masters of the Universe: Revelation & Revolution” Netflix Animated Series have been chomping at the bit for another season.

Teasing fans with an end-stinger that Despara would appear (the Horde alter ego of Adam’s twin sister Adora), followers of the show were anticipating the long-awaited reunion of He-Man and She-Ra in animation.

However, based on public engagement reports, “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” did not do well ratings-wise.

While it ranked in Netflix’s Top-10 in its initial release, it was against weak competition and viewership did not compare to the successful “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” Part One.

Its ratings fell below another struggling Powerhouse Animation Studios release “Skull Island” (a show series creator Brian Duffield indirectly said did not earn enough viewers to financially justify another season.)

As an option to continue the “Skull Island” story back in May of 2024, creator Brian Duffield revealed the animated series may continue as a comic.

And that is exactly what happened. “Return to Skull Island“, a four-issue Monsterverse comic book miniseries from Titan Comics and Legendary Comics, was released in 2025 and advertised as a continuation of the 2023 Netflix animated series “Skull Island.” (It’s final issue just hit comic stands a couple of weeks ago).

Officially placed within the Monsterverse timeline, it was reportedly a success (with expanded comic adventures announced for next year titled “Escape from Skull Island“).

So hopefully “Return to Skull Island” will blaze a trail and inspire the team behind “Masters of the Universe: Revelation & Revolution” to finish this trilogy in comic form.

Bringing series artist Eddie Nunez into the fold would be an excellent idea, ensuring the creative team will faithfully match the animated series look (much like they did with the “Forge of Destiny” prequel comic series).

And bringing in writer Tim Sheridan on writing duties would also be outstanding move, someone who has not only superbly written for the Revelation & Revolution animated series but the comic tie-ins as well.

They have the right talent. They have the hungry audience. So will the conclusion of the Masters of the Universe: Revelation / Revolution trilogy ever be told in comics? We can only hope.

  1. Hmmm… There’s an unfortunate reminder to be made here: we had enough of Despara as a drawn character back in the 2010s (thanks to DC Comics). Having her in motion is one thing, but having her in action on the battlefield was the only way to do this unique character justice. But anyway, at least now the curtain has fallen once and for all — no more suspense!

  2. For my sake, I’d be very happy settling for a comic finale or ongoing continuation. However, my daughter had grown up with these shows, and it had been a really bonding experience for us. She desperately wants another season. I’m really hoping Netflix is waiting to see how the movie does in 2026 or plans to release something to coincide with it. I know it doesn’t seem likely at this point, but I’m an eternal optimist and the fact that they have officially cancelled it yet gives me hope.

    1. @orcdawg These days shows are not cancelled officially. Look at the children’s He-Man series mate. You may learn something from an actor or showrunner in an interview but if that doesn’t happen fans are left wondering. Their lack of communication is frustrating.

    1. @durendal That’s a good thought. There wasn’t really any major loose ends at the end of Revolution, just future plots that could be further explored. It was a good ending that I can be happy with…though I really want to see those plots continue
