Several weeks ago, IMAX revealed their entire slate of movies scheduled to be released in their premium format in 2026.

With 20 IMAX movies in total slated for next year, anticipated big budget films like “Toy Story 5“, “The Mandalorian and Grogu“, “Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow“, “Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (a carry over from 2025) made the list.

However, there was one potential studio tentpole film notably absent from the IMAX roster: “Masters of the Universe“.

A special effects laiden, fantasy film with a reported 200 million dollar budget, “Masters of the Universe” (on paper) seemed like it would have been an amazing candidate to receive such a spectacular treatment in projection technology.

We suspect the reason why the June 5th release of the New “Masters of the Universe” Movie will not be released in IMAX is the small window between IMAX releases “The Mandalorian and Grogu” ( May 22) and “Toy Story 5” (June 19).

Most cinema multiplexes only have one IMAX projector and one IMAX screen… and contracts between IMAX and Studios dictates how long an IMAX movie has to run in the premium format before it can be replaced with another movie.

So unfortunately, likely due to the blockbuster movie schedule that surrounds the New “Masters of the Universe” Movie, while He-Man will be on the big screen… the most powerful man in the universe won’t be on the biggest.
Thanks for awesome community member @slycooperastroboy51 for turning us on to this.
The “Masters of the Universe” Movie is currently in Post-Production with the film scheduled to be released in cinemas worldwide on June 5th, 2026.
We’ll see you next time!

This is a shame. From what was shown in the leaked set photos the sets are gigantic and Eternia will be gorgeous.
IT WILL STILL BE THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!
Not a deal breaker and the film wasn’t filmed for IMAX screens so nothing missed.
That is poetry AJ
It should still get LPF screens during the week of its release. I should have something official in the booking notes around march/April.
It may split but it should have shows in those houses.
That’s too bad… this always means extra income and makes the box office receipts look higher.
But then, I guess if it hasn’t been shot for IMAX, I am not sure if it makes sense… 🤔
