Looks to be true:

Major shakeup, I can't imagine Playmates having no hand in TMNT. I wonder who will get the master license next?
This is actually pretty sad news to me...
Playmates filled the hole that was left once Mattel's MOTU and LJN's ThunderCats ran their course. I was/am an avid TMNT fan - thanks in no small part to Playmates' toys.

speaking of TMNT, few months ago I started collecting JOYTOY TMNT line, I can only say that I have never seen better turtles...guys at Joytoy know what they doing obviously...the design of the toys, the accessories, soon the turtle van is coming, amazing...
I think this is a part of why Playmates had to bow out... when they had the exclusive rights to make action figures based on TMNT, they sold them like hot cakes. Now, you can't walk down the toy aisle without tripping over some TMNT figure made by some other company.
What's worse, is that the competition is usually better quality than the Playmates stuff.

Welp, it's Mattel. I kinda suspected. Any guesses on what we'll see?

What's really annoying is Mad Hatter says Hasbro bid for the licence and wanted to do an '87 cartoon line!
Mattel can't distribute their own brands so I'm genuinely worried about what they'll do to TMNT. According to Pixel Dan it's the master licence too, so they can potentially upset what already exists from NECA, JoyToy etc. But really, who knows? In an ideal world I'd have handed it to Hasbro.
Funny enough, both Hasbro and Mattel have already made TMNT figures by finding workarounds...
The Power Rangers x TMNT and Turtles of Grayskull, lol.
I will say, it's a good thing that Neca has almost exhausted their Turtle offerings (those that matter anyway... I can't stand the 2012 Nick Toons versions, yuck), however, I was really hoping they would go all out on the Archie line.
As it is, Mattel may very well pull the rug out from all the other toy makers.
