Hot take. I will be seeing Scary Movie before I see Masters.

@gatorrob I only saw the first 2 which were really funny. Were the other ones worth watching?

The Scary Movie franchise has been stupid since the beginning. The only reason it'll offer any competition for Masters of the Universe is because people are equally stupid.

@smitty-81 they were funny when I first saw them but that was in my early 20’s. Things I found humorous back then have changed as I got older

MOTU needs to be a stone cold hit on release day to be brutally honest. These are just the movies releasing around it and it needs to still be going strong throughout July for what it cost. By then you've got Moana, Minions and The Odyssey amongst others. 

@brasco They were funny but they gradually became less edgy as time went on and they were running out of material to make fun of. I think that's why Anna Faris left early but now she's back just like Jamie Lee Curtis making fun of Laurie Strode. 😆

2 million views vs. 37 million views. Meh.

They were never "edgy" they were low brow toilet humor.

You don't think they are funny. That's fine. Humor is is the mind of the beholder. I don't understand why you are harping on it especially when you are fan of He-Man. He-Man fans gets made fun all the time too. You think you would have some empathy.

Watched the first two Scary Movies last Halloween because I had no other good ideas of movies to watch that night. They were funny. No real comment except I was caught off guard by "RUN BITCH RUUUUNNN!!" because it used to be a soundbyte used a lot in the golden age of a youtuber I was obsessed with as a teen, SMG4 (SuperMarioGlitchy4). Betting none of y'all get the reference.

But nah I don't think this is a threat to MOTU. R-rated raunchy horror parody vs. PG-13-butreallyPG-9isamorefittinglabel colorful action franchise film.

I swear if Scary Movie was PG-13, Mattel would've definetly tried to create another Barbenheimer phenomenon but it would fail because Barbenheimer was just sort of a happy accident because of people online again and again joking that two tonally opposite movies were coming out on the same day. It was not made up by desperate board execs. I don't think something of that caliber will ever be recreated.

I don't know. These movies don't seem to operate in the same register. Besides, people still have the option of watching several movies in one day when they're organized accordingly.
As for Motu, it could be considered the franchise's inaugural film since it hasn't been seen in theaters for thirty-nine years, making it a real curiosity. Second, the concept has evolved to be much more in line with this universe, which again excites the curiosity of fans. All in all, I wouldn't worry too much.

Yeah, hard to say. In cinema attendance terms Spielberg's name means absolutely nothing now, he attached himself to way too many bombs down the decades after Jurassic Park. But relatively low key horror has been doing really well recently and it reminds me of Arrival which did decent business for what it is and was well received. Plus IRL aliens are becoming quite the fascination again with notable people admitting they're real and that we've had all sorts of contact (it's so weird typing that)

People treat movies as events now*, so MOTU needs to tap into that. Scary Movie can definitely do that for it's audience because you think of how many horror franchises got started in just the last ten years. And Hollywood recently remembered comedies are a thing. 

* Cinema attendance is way down since the pandemic, people only see two or three movies a year max on average now. Streaming is standard and cinema is basically a talking point instead of the thing we always just did. As a result it costs way too much to buy in these days. That's what this Hollywood pivot to comedy and horror is really about, those are way cheaper to make and thus profit from. The economics of something like MOTU or even Marvel have fundamentally changed.
