Title says it all. People waited 15 years for another Tron movie. It finally happens and it stars the unhinged Joker Morbius. What's even worse is that he has been attached to Tron Ares since around 2017 I think when it was in development hell and Disney out of all companies, who tries to fight any and all controversies that constantly come their way, decides to keep him all the way through filming.
What was his method acting here? Walking around with a VR headset on him at all times when no cameras were rolling?
But seriously, if this is the first major exposure of MOTU to millions of the general public, will they be interested if that despite the other major Hollywood actors involved like Idris Elba and Allison Brie are in it, the main antagonist. The most iconic character of the franchise (I no joke somehow argue Skeletor is more iconic in pop culture than He-Man himself) is played by the most infamous actor right now who is still somehow getting good work?
Worse case scenario, Leto's presence wouldn't make it a box office bomb per say, but rather a box office disappointment which basically means "People did see it, but not enough to recoup our budget nor justify a film franchise".
What do y'all think?
Regarding the controversies he was involved in, yes, I was legitimately nervous to see him attached to the franchise, whether for the movie or otherwise, to be honest. We've been waiting almost 40 years for a decent Masters of the Universe comeback in theaters. The previous one encountered a considerable amount of setbacks: Warner was pretty much bankrupt at the time, Mattel invested considerably in the project, and technical constraints led to the substitution of key characters ( Orko, Trap Jaw, Battle Cat, etc.). Long story short, now that the damage has been done in terms of casting, as long as Leto's face is covered by a latex mask, which has yet to be confirmed, I think I could deal with his presence on screen. I mean, this is terrible, but I can't form an opinion about him as an actor. I'm totally indifferent! One thing is for sure: If Mattel wanted to generate buzz for this movie, they picked the right candidate (lol).
I think Leto might help the movie. Hear me out. Yea If Leto was He-Man it would bomb bro. EPIC BOMB. That's because people don't just hate him they love to hate him but that's why I think he will work as Skeletor. Nobody roots for Skeletor.
🇺🇸 SNOUT SPOUT FOR PRESIDENT 🇺🇸
Disney released their second meh attempt at a Haunted Mansion film adaptation two years back that no one saw because it was barely advertised and they dumped it in June when it would’ve been more appropriate in October but it’s speculated they did this for it to be.
Leto played the somewhat antagonist, the Hatbox Ghost (I’m a huge theme park nut and even if you aren’t I really recommend looking up the character’s history in the original Disneyland Haunted Mansion ride it’s very interesting and was an anomaly for many years)
thing is despite his name being on the poster, he isn’t really in the film until the third act and from what I can remember (only saw it when it first released) I think he only voices the ghost and we only see Leto in-person via a flashback.
I feel like even though Skeletor will be the antagonist, the marketing will do its best to downplay the fact that Leto is playing him other than his name on the poster.
said this a few times before, but I’m hoping Skel’s face is motion capture. Then audiences will likely forget for most of the movie that unhinged Joker is present.
It is an ensemble cast, so I don't think he will hurt them much. I haven't really been paying attention to the Tron 3 promotion to see how much he is factoring in there in which he seems to be a bigger part of that movie. I don't think Tron 3 will do great at the box office for a variety of reasons.
TBH I think if the first trailer of the movie released like say, a fews ago with Tron Ares, this actually could've HELPED Tron Ares at the box office, but only by a small margin of I estimate 3-5%?
Yeah today any movie trailer you can easily view when it drops on Youtube but if the movie is as big as everything about it is telling us, I somehow feel like a trailer for this film would've somehow unknowingly persuade people to go see the new highest profile (I don't mean highest performing) movie this weekend with the same star no matter the image, though that depends on how good said the trailer is. If it's a good two minutes of kickass, hell yeah people wanna see that on the big screen as if it's a reverse desert after a mid to mediocre meal. A new trailer for an anticipated film may get people to see the highest advertised movie that weekend.
I know this is a weird explanation and this is something I feel like you'll get yet don't at the same time.
All I know is that in 1998, you could either download a low quality upcoming movie trailer on your computer that would take an hour maybe or go see Meet Joe Black, The Waterboy or A Bug's Life, only pay to see a ticket to see specific trailer, then leave the place and it occurs so often that the studio lets theaters play Phantom Menace preview both before and after the movie so people would actually stay.
He won't help. The best Leto can do is not suck and make Skeletor the new Joker meme.
Generally I think with an ensemble movie or a movie that is focused a lot on Price Adam, Leto shouldn’t really hurt the film I think.
But when I happened to look online just now, checking Xitter w/ the MOTU Tag, there are some bros that have a strange obsession with him, they *want* to see him destroyed, but it doesn’t even seem to be connected all much to his personal life accusations.
They are mostly down on him b/c Tron:A seems to be in trouble, and they direct all the blame, and all the Schadenfreude solely at him (mind you, Tron is a difficult “franchise”)…
It’s just they hate him, which may or may not have rather to do with his slightly feminine vibe, or weirdo / indie vibe… But it reminds me of the hate campaigns against MOTU Revelation. Just numerous random posts that they won’t see MOTU 2026 if he’s in it, but no “likes” for these posts, or saying that he’ll tank the movie, etc etc
The internet is so weird. I do think the time for such campaigns has slightly passed, so it might not hurt the movie much. Also, his face will be obscured most often (probably?), which will help.
But Leto’s baggage will be in every blurb about the film. Possibly rightfully so. But then, in case of Revelation, it was much more successful than (the less “controversial”) Revolution.., Perhaps it’s good for the new film after all. 😏
I have my reservations of Leto being in the film. However, I do hope he doesn't wreck this movie from his weirdness in real life. I just want the movie as a whole to be good. I don't want to form a negative thought process of this movie so I am just going to wait and see what he actually does with the role. I do hope having other good names in here helps the rest of the story be told as it should.

From what I gather Ares wouldn't have happened without Leto pushing for it, even to the extent of becoming star and executive producer, so it's no wonder people aren't happy now that it's a bomb. And let's be honest, there's obvious questions about how that guy keeps getting top roles. But especially with Disney!
I would like to believe Disney will pull a Suicide Squad with Tron regardless of the reception and box office performance in five years with a new Tron movie, Leto-less and one people immediately go see because it's from a loved MCU director or something
Also Disney still needs to really justify the relevance of their new minute long Tron light cycle themed roller coaster in Florida that took them a little under six years from announcement to completion (yeah COVID, but still way longer than it usually takes for them to build a new ride) and millions and millions to build that's ultimately just a clone of a ride from Shanghai Disney.
Yes: Leto will hurt the box office performance IF he is involved with the media junkets and has his face out at talk-shows and premiers. The studio should tell Leto to stay home and not be involved with any of the publicity.
Aight people, seems the jimmy new Tron really didn't do too well because of Leto and don't quote me on this but apparently they're making a new Pacific Rim movie.......with Jared Leto......
wake the fuck up Hollywood
This really has me thinking, the movie isn't out for another eight months.......
Just saying.....depending on how much of Skeletor is in the movie and whether or not his face is CG or not...
If Mattel has a brain, they could pull a Back to the Future Eric Stoltz move and basically reshoot all of the Skeletor scenes with a replaced actor.
and I mean just the Skel scenes and keep everything else the same, though there may have to be instances where they bring the other actors back for the reshoots if they're in frame with Skeletor.
If they were to go with this and started the process this month or next.....I honestly think it could be done. And by the time the movie releases it'll be finished and boom, no controversial actor.
Or delay the movie just a few more months with these reshoots. Look I know y'all have waited a literal Eternia for this movie, but NGL summer 2026 is already PACKED with big movies. Toy Story 5. Mario Galaxy Movie. The Industry plant Grogu movie. Supergirl. Spidey Brand New Day. Just sayin' guys.

Somebody at Disney is going all out and throwing Tron/Leto under the bus too, both THR and Deadline have been running remarkably specific takedowns of the entire project. Not that it doesn't deserve it, throwing a quarter of a billion at a vanity project!
Leto is so clearly box office poison that there's obviously something corrupt going on behind the scenes.
I was watching a video where a guy said Leto wouldn't even have been on your top 100 list to play Skeletor, controversies or not. He certainly wouldn't have entered my head when considering actors.

Best I can tell, the Pacific Rim story isn't true. Hopefully.
Have said this before, but Ben Mendelsohn. He would’ve made a great choice. Coincidentally He-Man made a cameo in Pop culture geek key jingling:The Movie aka Ready Player One, where he was the antagonist.
should this become a film franchise. My #1 fan cast for Hordak.
Okay I just actually saw Tron Ares
and yeah Transformers One effect of one huge bad thing putting general audiences off from a great movie that'll never get a follow up, this definitely has. I've only seen Leto in two movies, the Morbius meme one I just put on in the background one day and the Haunted Mansion one he was barely in. Strangely the big blow to this film's marketing is one of it's strong suits. I legit thought he was good in this movie and a real case of "Weirdo and maybe bad person, good actor" syndrome.
I somewhat have more faith in his Skeletor but not too much. I mean from what we know in cast interviews so far, filming the movie was fun for them, but no mention of them working with Jared yet.
It won't help the franchise it's too late but eh whatever go see Tron Ares in theaters
