@pop-inamorata I could use that right about now. I hit a wall and broke. But now just doing stuff for me. I did a reconfiguration of what few toys I have over the weekend. Started working on 2 fan fic’s that are rattling around my brain.

@pop-inamorata it was the 30th anniversary of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe DVD box set by Mill Creek. It has the whole Filmation Run, some New Adventures episodes, and all of 200X. Some other items came with it two like Art Cards and A Gold Power Sword. I am missing the original plastic slip cover that came with it as I bought it second hand on a whim.

@pop-inamorata It's funny how I came across the set. I had given up hope on finding the 30th set as it was so expensive. I live in a small town and no place to buy anything really. One day I decided I wanted to go to a used video game store in the closest city. It was nice and I decided that I wanted to walk a bit. So I parked a bit away to do this. On the way there was a used media store. I went in looked around nothing.. Then just as I was leaving there it was behind the counter. The clerk just happened to be moving it so it caught my eye.

Kind of a hard question for me to answer.

Growing up in the 80's I was a bit out of the target range of the original cartoon but still watched it.

But...I don't think I appreciated it then. I certainly didnt buy any toys and from there just saw it as a property I knew about, but didn't really click with.

Somewhere in the Netflix series I found myself slowly delving deeper into following it. Maybe it was a more complex story with consequences and reveals or the witty writing, but I started to see something I had missed the first time around on the original show.

And I should say here...I've never been much on sword and sorcery properties (unless you count Star Wars).

The Netflix show really opened up a door for me to see there was something that made me want more.

I went back and grabbed the original series (and She-Ra) and found myself tearing thru the lengthy (funny how much more content we got in those days huh?) series's and enjoying it. It is a bit aimed at a younger audience than say shows like Transformers and G.I. Joe (some of my favorite properties), but yet MOTU also had something those shows didn't have. I was surprised to see two things I had not seen before.

A diverse amount of foes.
Unlike Joe (who mostly just battled Cobra) or TF (who mostly battled the Decepticons) He-Man battled more than just Skeletor.

The lesson.
Other shows often had a point or some lesson, but MOTU's lessons seemed to be aimed at lessons to make kids be better people.

So what does He-Man / MOTU mean to me?

Aside from action, adventure and fellowship its about being the better person.
And for me personally, its about me remembering to revisit things with a new eye.

@allhailmotherboard (Insert slow clap here). Amazing story my friend. Sometimes you don’t always see something as it was the first time a round. I’m glad you found something New that brought you back to an old property. I am attempting to watch the Filmation series, but keep forgetting where I left off. I guess I’ll just start it again for a third time, which if my calculations are correct would be a charm. As I type this I am currently taking a break from sorting my what was supposed to be “small” Masterverse figure collection. Spoiler I’m at 82 now.

I had to think on this. He-Man to me is my childhood. He's an escape. Without going too far down the rabbit hole, I have some extreme trauma from my childhood. Not at the hands of my parents or family mind you. Someone else.

He-Man and MOTU provided me an escape, an outlet, and a way to temporarily put the pain behind me. I identified with Prince Adam in regards to hiding a secret. I'm much older now with kiddos of my own and have worked through the events of my past. He-Man still provides me that safe space where I can just relax and enjoy the stories. My birthdays consist of binge watching the entire Filmation series and now Revelation/Revolution as well.

I will forever be thankful to He-Man and the creators of MOTU for the joy and healing they've brought to me. In short He-Man means the world to me.

We Have the Power!

To me MOTU is the first 'proper' cartoon I got really invested in. That blend of sorcery and science will never not work for me! It opened up my imagination like nothing else.

It helped that my dad bought me tens of the amazing figures and Grayskull. I can't thank Mark Taylor and the product designers enough.

I was actually introduced to He-Man long before his peers like Batman, Superman or Spider-Man, but he's cut from the same cloth and an inspiration to this day.

@george We for sure have the power. He was there for us growing up and in times of need. A world to explore and just be a kid. I’m glad you’ve worked through your past, it is a hard thing to do. Binge watching on your Birthday is a great idea, and way to spend the day. May your journey be good from here on out. Although when you stumble Eternia is a place of magic.

@sketchyskeletor what’s not to love, a larger than life man using a sword along side those with tech. It’s a mash of two worlds that has a great balance. It also helps to have a parent that supports your love. Everyone that worked on this line past and present deserve admiration and praise. May Grayskull keep you imagination alive and well.

He-man added my moral compass and helped me keep a level head from a young age.  He was my first “super hero” and the only one that really stayed with me.  Here was a man that could do anything, unlimited power, but only used it for others.  He would go out of his way to de-escalate and avoid fighting.  That message resonated with me and has helped keep me grounded my whole life.  I met my wife at a relatively young age, 21, and she had a young daughter who I bonded with over Filmation reruns and my own vintage MOTU figures.  Now 21 years later, that same little girl is my daughter and we still collect everything MOTU together, never missed a Power-Con and I can’t wait to take her to the new movie so she gets that same “big screen” moment some of us had in 87.

@sshook27 amazing story. I’m glad you had the opportunity to pass along Masters Of The Universe through reruns of Filmation and figures. Having He-Man as a moral compass is a good pick. I think that’s another neat thing about He-Man, we all have our stories of him. He’s a legend that endures. (Sorry for the delay in replying)

I wasn't going to talk about this, but seeing everyone else's stories made me change my mind.

Admittedly, I was mostly a casual fan of the OG MotU. There were other series I was more into.

However, things were kind of rough the year I graduated from high school (2001). My father had been doing badly the last 4 or 5 years. We finally convinced him to get a diagnosis (he was stubborn that way), and it came back positive for cancer. As you might expect, thing went downhill after that. I had to make myself the "family's rock" (all for the sake of my mother and younger sister).

As you can guess, that was about the time the 2002 MotU reboot started. Seeing these characters return in such an impactful way actually gave me the strength to keep going.

@costume-n00b I am glad you found a way to be the rock. It takes a lot out of a family going through something like that. Life is funny sometimes a fandom comes to us later in life in a new way. I am glad you shared your story. Each of us is here for a reason and that can also be reason to give support. We need a community that is safe and welcoming in always. Life doesn't always deal fair cards, just know you don't have to hold them alone.

Love to see how this thread keeps giving, I've entered many times to see the comments, to identify myself with some and be surprised by others. It's a bit long but now I also want to share my experience:

For me, He-Man meant rediscovering someone I used to be and didn't remember. I watched the cartoon when I was a little girl, maybe between the ages of 4 and 8. My brothers had some of the action figures and some of the Golden Books. I became obsessed with those, I told everyone that the owl that sometimes perched in a tree at my father's house was Zoar. I made up my own stories, I seem to recall writing an alternative ending to the story with a giant clock, my Barbies became The Sorceress and Evil-Lyn (I didn't like Teela back then). Then life got complicated, I grew up, moved around a lot, struggled to fit in, and to do so I became the standard of what was expected of an ordinary girl. In my late thirties, my husband (who has helped me for years to recover and exercise my primal weirdness) sent me a link to the trailer for Revelation, asking me if I had seen that cartoon when I was a child. I hadn't thought about it in decades, and it was a total mind blow. How could I have forgotten something I loved so much? I rewatched all of Filmation, discovered the comics, the 2000s version, the fanfics, the art books, the ilustrations, the board games. I really regretted coming across he-man.org when it was only weeks away from disappearing. Along with He-Man, I rediscovered many things from that years that I now enjoy again and it makes me very happy to feel that my childhood taste and personality, long buried by the things of life, is valid and I can exercise it at will

@gsikleb Welcome to the fray. What a wonderful story I chuckled several times in the best of ways. Sometimes we have core memories we forget about in order to fit in elsewhere. It does sadden me that you had to hide who you were at some point in your life. Props to your husband for helping your recovery. For you though it was like a brand new experience again. Sure you had some distant memories, the Zoar owl being the cutest thing I have read in a while. I like how it is fresh eyes for you again and you quickly went down a rabbit hole. I to enjoy a good fanfic now and again. I've tried my hand at writing one but my brain is far to squirrelled for that. I hope you two continue to grow and find new fandoms to enjoy together as well as embrace this one. Thank you for adding to the thread, and welcome to a good place to be in place of the .ORG. AJ and crew have done a fantastic job of this site for us fans. I am still excited my post is pinned to a category.
