Now I know what you may be thinking. "SlyBoy what are you talking about?"
With next year's theatrical film likely bringing in a whole swarm of new MOTU fans, I have an idea that has been proven before for Mattel and DC which I think could actually work for MOTU
Direct-to-video/Streaming movies. More the latter because home media is sadly slowly dying but I digress.
So DC has been doing many, many of these 2D animated ones for years. Some liked. Some not. Some take place in the same universe. Some are their own separate one off thing for the sake of an adaptation or trying something new with these characters.
I think these things can really work for MOTU. Why? Because Mattel does it all the time. They release yearly kids video movies/specials based off Barbie/My five-year old self's religion known as Thomas (Bless Ringo Starr, George Carlin and Alec Baldwin sparklesparklesparklefuckyeahsparklesparklesparkle).
Yeah these are for younger kids and these would be for older audiences, but take that business strategy and apply it to MOTU. The DC animated movies are estimated to cost around $3.5 million each. Considering the rate of how much of them WB puts out a year (three to five at an average!) and how good the 2D animation is on them for movies not meant for theaters, that is really impressive. Now would I expect 3-5 MOTU 2D animated movies a year if they went with this strategy? No. But the experience and resources for Mattel may be there to tell many, many standalone feature length stories focusing on different characters, new stories, maybe even continuations? Comic adaptations? 1-2 of them a year would be good if they ever went this route.
Though I dunno if the fact that these would ideally be 2D as opposed to the CG animation in the Barbie/Tank Engine God's specials would factor into the budget.
So what do y'all think?
Just to give some ideas for what movies they could make:
- Satisfying conclusions to 200x and Revelation/Revolution or as much as they can to want to fit in an hour and a half runtime or they can be two-parters or trilogies? DC does those.
- A unique visual take on Randor and Keldor's lives growing up and bonding together and how Skeletor came to be. Comparable to such films as Prince of Egypt, Revenge of the Sith and most recently, Transformers One. I have my own idea for how I would execute a unique take, but I would be rambling on.
- Turtles of Grayskull animated adaptation. Happened with their run in with Batman, and while we're at it...
- DC crossover animated adaptation because why not?
- If Mattel were to ever finally get the full cartoon She-Ra rights from Dreamworks/Universal (what use do they have for them now that She-Ra '18 has been over for a while?), I would personally want a modern standalone remake of Secret of the Sword featuring elements of the franchise that have been introduced since it's release. Despara maybe?
- Masterverse/Multiverse movie because why not even if general audiences are tired of it by now?
- Various feature length "What if?" stories. They could probably be anthology films.
and these are just some ideas I came up with. Would love to hear others if you have any.
I would totally be down for some animated movies! Here's some of my ideas:
-An adaptation of the early mini-comics ("Savage He-Man")
-New Eternia adaptation based on the Masterverse blurbs.
-Another stab at New Adventures.
-A proper "vs. Snake Men" movie with King Hiss as the villain.
-An adaptation of the MOTUC mini-comics, especially He-Man and Skeletor's final battle.
-Son of He-Man
-Sequel to the original movie.
-Put me down for a Turtles of Grayskull movie!

Most of these are great ideas except in my personal opinion Son of He-Man and '87 movie sequel. I feel like the trope of "Child of iconic hero carrying on their father's legacy" has been overdone and I would rather have one of your other suggestions. '87 movie sequel? Imma be honest, who would be clamoring for it? Making one I feel like would be a waste of Mattel's money and resources. Has the film that put the franchise on life support then long hibernation REALLY gained that big of a following among fans other than the character designs that were recently made figures in Masterverse?
With New Adventures, it would at least be something very unique yet they could add in some more familiar franchise characters and elements but still have the thing stand on it's own. Actually feel like a more Sci-fi He-Man and not just the protag and antag sharing the names and an unrecognizable Teela showing up for one episode (honestly this is the most I know about NA. Rare hardcore fans feel free to correct me)
How about a sequel to Revolution, featuring She-Ra?

You are a dream seller, that's for sure!I would totally be down for some animated movies! Here's some of my ideas:

@adam_prince-of-eternia Yeah that could work if they want to wrap things up with a Netflix movie. Problem is I feel like Netflix and Mattel now may have an internally sour relationship because of how Netflix netflixes and cancelled 2/3 MOTU shows prematurely
Plus there's the factor of what they had planned for a Season 3 and decided what of the many ideas they have to cram into an hour and a half long movie cohesively.
The fact that She-Ra had a full run as the creators intended it for a show on Netflix was a complete fluke.

Fair, my main annoyance with the '87 movie is that I actually stayed after the credits (I thought there would be a safety message like in the cartoon) and was promised a sequel we never got. However, I feel inclined to defend my Son of He-Man choice.
In the MOTUC mini-comics, He-Man comes back to Eternia after 15 years of adventuring to find out he has a son, Dare. They meet and embrace. Then we have a short time-skip and Dare is complaining that his dad won't teach him how to fight. And I'm here off the page screaming "WHAT IS THIS RELATIONSHIP LIKE?"
I mean, the kid is 15. He's lived with his mother in a mystical, possibly haunted castle with minimal outside contact (presumably) while hearing stories about his heroic father. Who then proceeds to literally appear from the sky one day to take over the kingdom and suddenly wants to have a relationship. Oh, and you might be taking over his mantle someday. The aspiring writer in me drools at that setup because I desperately want to see that relationship develop. Is Dare angry at his father's absence? Is he enamored with him? Does He-Man know the first thing about being a father to a teenager he's never met? And who is the villain who throws a wrench into all this? Skeletor's son, who has his own father issues? The Unnamed One, who helped create the sword at the center of the series and now he wants it back (despite the backlash he received, I the Unnamed One is a great potential villain who has never really been tapped. Imagine someone more familiar with the series macguffin than even the heroes.)
I agree "Next Generation" stories can be blah, but I think there is enough groundwork present for an interesting Son of He-Man story.
@chrisa Okay when you put it that way maybe there could be something with this premise
Okay film idea: An ACTUAL follow-up to the Filmation toons. I know Revelation when it came out marketed itself as such with stuff like "After 36 years, he returns!" that sort of crap, but that was really just to get people who never saw 200x hooked and c'mon. C'MON! Look I'm a newer fan, but regardless of what you think of the show, did any of you genuinely think that Filmation and Revelation took place in the same universe when you saw the first trailer? There's an obvious sign just by looking at them that these are two different beasts 36 years apart and different continuities that I would say are parallel (A lot of stuff happened the same in both timelines but a lot is different as well)
'Aight enough rambling, what I mean by an actual Filmation follow-up? I have the perfect example: Batman:Return of the Caped Crusader, a DC animated film that was basically one huge tribute to the 60s Adam West show in tone and campiness as well as West and Ward as Bats and Robin
Sadly there's no way for any actor reprisals if there were a Filmation MOTU equivalent with the exception of maybe Melendy Britt if she can still do Adora decently enough?
I would expect a story that feels like an 80s TV special event rather than a movie, not too big in scale. Market it as if it is a lost episode not seen in 40 years. recreated music, recreated animation cycles, Really good VA soundalikes and yes, of course an end of the film PSA. Some self awareness to the campiness. Lighthearted joke jabs at fan disliked elements of the franchise since the 80s (Is Revelation in the room)?
It would also be a bit surreal to see the original hand drawn type animation be recreated with modern computer ink and paint, stuff like that.
Do y'all see the vision?

I wasn't in this fandom when it first aired but I was very surprised to find out She-Ra and the Princesses of Power lasted 5 seasons.
@brain77 Yeah we actually got a complete story. I know the show was divisive, but personally I really enjoyed it. So much more character development than in the original Filmation show IMO.
@he-metayer I found out that people worship that show especially in the lgbtq community. It has a big following. I think if they made more there would be an audience for it.

It didn't last 5 seasons. The initial episode order was 52 episodes and Netflix didn't order any more after that.
