FYI, I'm scheduled to have partial knee replacement surgery for my right torn meniscus knee on January 13th. I'm afraid my time jumping out of helicopters as a USAF combat search-and-rescue medic has finally caught up with this aging warrior.
I understand the first seventy-two hours are hell, but I'm a tough old dog and I know I'll survive. Hey, I'll have a gorgeous blued-eyed, red haired nurse to help me through it... 😉
Has anyone else here had knee surgery and how was it for you?
Sorry you have to go through this Jack, I know how harrowing surgeries can be but I am sure you will get through it all fine.

Thank you, Mikey. As I said in a he-manworld.com thread, it pales in comparison to what you've gone through. I'm a tough old warrior, so I'll be fine. Know that you'll be in my and my family's prayers at Mass this evening.
I hope everything goes okay

I never experienced knee surgery (knock on wood) but I hope it goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

Thank you, AJ.
It's two weeks from today for my surgery. The first day is supposed to be okay because I'll still have a lot of surgery anesthetic in me. As I understand it, the seventy-two hours following that are the worst. As I said, I'm a tough old dog -- surviving being a USAF search-and-rescue combat medic, the killing fields of the Hollywood studio system and forty-seven years as a writer-director-producer. I'll handle it. By comparison, this oughta be a cakewalk. 😉
Happy New Year everyone. 🙂
Good luck with your surgery. It must be rough giving up what you loved to do. Thank you for doing a job like that.

Well my USAF service as a helicopter combat search-and-rescue medic was many years ago. It was an honor and privilege for me to help protect and defend our country's freedoms and liberties and I was fortunate to be in a career field in which fallen pilots and crew members were in need. So in that sense there are times when I do miss it.
On balance, having my spent the last 47 years writing, producing and directing television series and films that have hopefully brought smiles and happiness to audiences worldwide is a blessing beyond measure. As for my career in the entertainment business, I may be 76 but I have many, many more mountains to climb and conquer. When legendary producer Norman Lear (The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Maude) turned 90, a reporter asked "After all these years in the business, now that you're ninety what do you think after you finish a project?" Without blinking, The Great Man said, "I think 'What's next?'" Now I certainly don't equate myself to Norman Lear, but I get what he meant. As the playwright Noel Coward once said, "Work is much more fun than fun", so I'll just keep on keeping on. 🙂
In retrospect, it all kind of evens out. 😉
My partial knee replacement surgery is one week form today. I'd appreciate good thoughts and prayers if you re of a mind to give them.
Actually looking forward to the surgery. Tired on my bad knee/torn meniscus kicking my butt... 🙂
@theman Life is all about what is next. If we don't live for the next thing what do we have? Thanks for your story. Good luck with the surgery. Good vibes sent on repeat.
Thanks, Doctor. That means a lot to me. I'm on final approach now -- three days until my surgery -- and am I ever ready!!! 🙂
FYI, my partial knee replacement surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning -- January 13th. I will be on pain meds, recovering and starting physical therapy immediately thereafter. I anticipate being offline for the rest of there week but will try to post an update over the weekend.
I'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank those who compassionately offered me well-wishes and prayers. As I've said, that means a great deal to me. Thank you, my friends.
VERY rough deal. I’ll post more when I’m able.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all who reached out to me with well-wishes and prayers. They meant the world to me.
I'm glad to say I'm at my desk typing this post after finishing my first out patient PT session today. A bit grueling, but I made great progress, able to be on the stationary bike for fifteen minutes My therapy team is wonderful, headed by our dear friend who has been the director of the hospital's PT division for seventeen years. I'm getting the best of care. I'm on a six times a day at-home exercise regimen and I'd be lying if I didn't admit there's surely a bit of pain involved, but my Kim has been incredible pup has stepped up in a comfort dog role, virtually attached at my hip.
Finally, I'm delighted to say the end is in sight for my pain pills. I've never been a fan of opioids, and I feel they can be a slippery slope. But there is a time and a place for them I suppose. They did their job and I'm grateful. I'll be to the point of just taking Extra Strength Tylenols 'as needed' by the end off the week.
Well on the mend. Again, thanks to one and all for your support, empathy and caring. I believe t's the best of what fan sites are about and I'll never forget you guys for being there for me. 🙂
@theman Although it sounds like you've got work to do, it seems like things are looking up for you. I'm very happy to hear you're at home, with solid support. Also glad to hear you're adhering to your therapy. That is crucial, although it can be a pain at times. You've got this, man!
As I said, I drew comfort and strength from so many fans closing around me during what has been a difficult time.
I'm getting better with each passing day. Tomorrow is my final day on a small, once every eight hours dose of Hydrocodone. From there on I'll be taking Extra Strength Tylenol once or twice a day as needed. Jim had my in-home office set up so I can begin returning to work on Monday. I've missed it. 🙂
FYI, very much on the mend now. Off opioids for a week, just on Extra Strength Tylenol. Mild discomfort. PT three times a week. Back at my desk working, which I missed a lot.
Again, many thanks to all you were concerned and offered well-wishes and prayers. 🙂
